Mountain Biking - rear derailer droke off help

first my story...i was riding my bike the other day and went of a curb and boom the whole rear derailer breaks off, so i just need to know where i can buy and what kind of rear derialer i need... this is like the 3rd time this has happened in the last year so i need something strong but i dont what to spend 100 dollars or more... i have a iron horse warrior and the derialer says 8 speed avialio (or something like that) shimano.

Is the derailleur itself broken or is just the derailleur hanger broken?

there is not a heavy duty derailer, but the you can get one identical to the one you just broke for a few dollars. Look for Shimano Alivio 8 sp derailer at www.nashbar.com or some other online retailer.

Why are you guys suggesting new derailleurs? It could just be a broken hanger which is a lot cheaper than $100.

His is an 8 speed, a deore is 9 speed.

a deore at nashbar is 16.99 it will work for 8 speed ... a hanger for my bike was 20 bucks ... I wish my derailleur would break instread of the hanger.

Wow is this like one of the few times to correct you. A 9 speed derailleur will work with any speed 9 and below. My Trek 4500 has a deore and it's 8 cogs.

Very true, girlscout runs a X9 with a 8speed cassette. Most of the time 8 speed stuff is cheaper than 9 speed. I should have said that in the first place.

yeah I have enough parts to replace my whole 8 speed chainline.. It cost a grand total of 50 bucks ... chain 15 cassette 5 derailer 16 and chainrings 15. Last time I wore out the cassete and chain those 2 parts at the lbs cost me 50 and tax... I need to stay off of nashbar.

That is not true. There most certainly are heavy duty derailleurs.

Hey Wolfgang. Something seems strange here. Your RD shouldn't just be snapping off like that for no reason. You may want to determine the reason your RD is failing before blindly installing yet another. Do you have any idea as to why this is happening to you???

Bet his chain is too long, he's riding in too low a gear or he put a bash guard on the bike and didn't shorten the chain. Jump off a curb (3 broken derailers in a year:eek::eek::eek:), the chain slaps down, rebounds and the derailer wraps up in a nice little bow and goes for a walk. Putting on a more expensive derailer would just mean a more expensive bit of junk to throw out when it biffs too;)

I agree, find the problem and then fix it.
