I am currently using 26X1.95" tires on my Mt. Bike (came w/bike new). I would like to put smaller tires on these wheels, can I go to 26 X 1".

I'd say yes, its hard to say withought knowing rim size, but if it has 1.95" now, i belive 1" is safe.

Hi,
that sounds like you are putting on road tires. I have used 1" and 1.4" Ritchey Tom SLicks. I liked the ride on the 1.4 incher a LOT better. The one inch is faster, but you really take some hits.

Sheldon Brown has a good chart relating rim width to acceptable tyre width.

A 1" tire is likely too narrow for a rim that came with 1.95" tires. You can try them, but if the tire isn't at least a bit wider than the rim you'll almost certainly gouge the rim in normal riding.
