Living Car Free - Biking with my kids

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

My daughter biked with me to an activity yesterday under her own power for the first time. :) We've done plenty of utility trips with a trail-a-bike. And she's biked around the neighborhood for fun and recreation. But this was her very first transportation trip under her own power.

How old? How far? Where? What activity? It only happens once. I forgot all these things about my daughter's first trips. It was either the grocery store or over to a friends house for her. I always made her carry something in her little white basket with flowers so she would feel like she was helping or see that the bike was useful. My plan backfired when she stopped in the middle of an intersection to take a brush out of the basket to arrange her hair. What's more important not holding up car traffic or looking pretty?

(those are root beers BTW;)) it is a great feeling when your children progress to that stage...now mine are gone from home and traveling the world:cry::o But I guess that is what we raise them to do. DD is on the west coast and will be headed back to college here in NC Monday. DS is going to be home from working in RI over the summer. Then in mid September he will be heading off to grad school in England. I can still remember teaching both of them to ride their first bikes. They both still have bikes and ride. DS is car free and relies on his Haro and mass transit. DD is not car free but mainly uses it only to come home on holiday breaks.

My grand daughter started riding with my on a tricycle when she was 4 and could ride the mile around the neighborhood non stop without breaking a sweat. She can now sustain a higher speed than I can and she is riding a 20 inch coaster bike. We are venturing out into the insane world of automobiles now.
