Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Convinced a friend to get a track bike today, hilarity ensues

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
He got a Fuji Track. Not a bad bike, pretty good bike for $400 (on sale @ performance). I've heard of the troubles with pre-built track/fixies involving the lockrings not being tight enough, and I almost killed him tonight. I was all, "come on, don't be a mangina, let's go hit these hills" and he finally gave in. So, we mash up the biggest hill that I know of in town, and when we head back down his cog slipped all the way off and he was totally freakin' out. I kept yelling at him to put his foot between the frame/wheel and he just started dragging his toes on the ground, not slowing down very much. He was smart enough to pull into a driveway and hopped off the bike. It was pretty funny, and he was scared ****less. I had him put the cog back on and mash back up the hill then we banged the lockring on with a screwdriver as hard as we could. I'm wondering if anyone has had to do this, and how well it might hold. He took off to go find his chick and said he was taking it back to the shop tomorrow. Those dudes at performance are idiots. When they put his toe-straps on they didn't twist them, and put one on backwards with the buckle on the inside. Anyway, what a way to get a fixxie initiation.

Ask for "Tom" there. And then yell at him. He's a ****** bag. Thanks.

And STILL you didn't bother to check it first. Wow, you would've felt pretty good if he got seriously hurt.
Wait a minute - the lockring on that hub has reverse thread, doesn't it?. Just because it's not supertight doesn't mean the cog is going to fall off? Am I missing something here? Anyway, whatever, maybe your friend should get a brake. And maybe you should help him set up his bike better.

I'm going to be blunt here:
- bike not inspected properly by competent mechanic friend or LBS prior to NEW fixed gear rider getting on it.
- prior knowledge of shabby bike builds from online store, yet NEW rider told dont be a *****, just ride it.
- no manual brake installed prior to NEW fixed gear rider getting onto bike
just saying.

Sorry to say it, but I think more blame rests on your shoulders than on the Performance shop. You could have sent your friend to the hospital.

You are lucky your friend didn't beat you up with a rusty pipe (assuming he didn't).
I predit LoRok will be back in about a month saying "i don't know what happened, i mashed up the biggest hill in town then my cog spun all the way off on the downhill and i freaked out!!!"
yeah the fact that he didnt have a brake was pretty dumb

anybody ever had a lockring come off like that without stripping the hub?

reading that, then your signature made me laugh^<br>
I was just going to leave this thread alone, but I can't. Performance wasn't the only idiot in that story. What in the hell do you think you're doing putting a new fixed-gear rider on the biggest hills in town brakeless? Dumb.

Wow. I'm feelin' the love. Just to defend myself a little, it was my friends choice to ride brakeless and against my advice. I do have a brake, and that is why. Second, we were both laughing AFTER the fact. I was quit concerned for the well being of my friend. Third, before we went out I fixed his straps and I tested his bike and when I layed down some skids on his bike there was no slippage of the cog/lockring. My friend does weigh about 50+ pounds more than me, and he's a body builder. I didn't know that he would have been able to spin the cog off. Seriously, he's one of my best friends, why would I want him to be hurt?
didn't strip the hub? lockring is counter threaded
So you could film it and send it in to jackass

You didn't seem to have any concern in your original post at all. I'm glad that was just a downfall of the medium (i.e. it didn't make the post) and not true idiocy on your part.

I don't understand how a lock ring could allow a cog to come off... if the cog started spinning off, when it hits the lock ring it couldn't get past the lock ring unless the lock ring was dangling off the hub on half of it's threads (as in, less than hand tight, baby hand tight...)... i call BS

Call what you want, it happened. He's taking his wheel up to the shop now. He kept insisting that he could ride it without putting any backpressure on and he'd be ok, but I had to keep reminding him of what happened last night. I hope the hub isn't stripped.

Quit hating on LoRoK.. we all forget things sometimes, or don't think of them. Not checking the cog and lockring was his only mistake, and that's almost as much Performance's mistake as his.
All this talk of stripping makes me want to... rapidly embrace bolt-on cog systems like Level's. Can't wait until these become the standard. Thread-on is bull****.

Yea, how did the lockring allow that hub to come off if you 'laid down some skids' earlier. Something this thread doesn't add up.

Don't know how we could have taken this statement as meaning that you egged you friend into a dangerous situation that you yourself wouldn't place your own hide in.

if the lock ring is cheap, and the cog is a cheap stamped cog- which they are on those bikes- then yes, the lock ring will come off, effectively stripping the hub. if the hub is truly stripped, there is a easy/cheap/good way to fix it without replacing the hub. let us know if it's stripped out.

Lets give LoRok the benefit of the doubt on this; seems like an honest mistake with bad story telling :)
It sounds like the lockring either came off or the threads were stripped.. No matter what this is a bummer.. But, riding brakeless from the start is just foolish.

I think you are so deadly right about that last statement. Why oh why do people feel the need to ride brakeless before learning how to ride?

If you checked out the bike and recomended a brake and helmet. then the fault lies with your pal, because ultimately it was your "Friend's" call to perform these percarious acts so, ultimately he made he's own choice, glad he's o.k. hope the hub is not strip'd, maybe this will convince him to run a brake for a few months untill he get's his bearings

We don't know why you want to kill him, but all we know is that you let him get on an unchecked bike with no brakes down a hill.

your 'big' hills must be weak. A really big hill should have killed your so called pall. No hopping off a bike at 30 mph.

Track bikes are often purchased by idiots, and idiots often think they're invincible. You never see smart people earning Darwin Awards.

That was not nice! ::shakes finger sternly::
Even if you did get him to use a brake, you could have made sure hilarity ensued by vaselining the brake pads.

jealous of his giant muscles
his muscle aren't that giant!
I met that kid yesterday and he has more balls than bike smarts. not scared of much!
at the rate he is going he will either be dead or great at fixed thing but at least he has a brake now .....but he is trying to do stoppies with them.
more balls than bike smarts.
Very true.
so in this kids defense and loroks
that **** is wack.
the lock ring was sort of bent in to the crappy cog that didn't have a flat surface to butt up against,(is that the right butt,or is it but , or maybe butte no wait that butte as in crest de)
any way that the first formula hub that I have seen fail, but I think in part to bad cog ...and bad lock ring install.
thank god he has a brake now cause he is rocking a suicide hub on the freewheel side.
do you think performance should or will fix his 2 day old jack hub,by replacing it?
