Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I think there are a few who hang around the touring forum. If I can get a decent Internet connection from work today, I might just move this thread over there.

Thomas Stevens did it on a high wheeler (ordinary) in the 1890's. His book, recently reprinted, is a good read.

Do you expect a accurate answer?
It can go one year and it can go ten years. It's just depending, which route you take and which parts you do with a boat or a plane.
Whats for you "properly"?

Hey there sheepy! Yeah..I did a world tour for two years from 1998-2000. My website has all kinds of stories, photos, practical tips, warnings, and various other sundry items. I went solo: I recommend you do the same. Feel free to ask me any questions you may have. Just a couple facts...
I did the route many people take: Alaska to southern south america; then flew to Portugal, went across Europe, the middle east, and on thru Asia to Korea. I did not do Africa as that would add a whole year to my trip and I did not want to make it a 3 year tour.
I stayed in formal campsites about 20% of the time; small rooms/motels/pensions about 30% of the time; and 'wild camped' almost half the time.

I am planning a 2nd world tour for later in this decade.

Great stuff, Roughstuff! I am jealous!
In a book entitled (if memory serves) "Miles from Nowhere" Barbara Savage tells the story of her round the world tour with her husband. It is a great book. They did skip over a couple of stretches in the middle east and Asia that were considered just too dangerous or unstable politically at the time.

I am going to travel the world on a bike in the next 5 years, I'm doing some of Europe as a taster next year, and we'll see where it progresses from there.
Uh, isn't there a few oceans in the way?
That wasn't funny, was it?

Haven't you seen those paddle steamer things that amusement parks seem so fond of...
I reckon I could pedal one of those across the Pacific no trouble at all.

Its funny I haven't thought of those as I work in a paddling shop that sells tons of those things.

Yes, there are a few oceans in the way. On the other hand don't forget its downhill all the way from Alaska to Tierra del fuego.

hi!
Here's the scoop!
odyssey tours. (http://www.odysseyworldcyclingtours.com/)
These guys are the first to put "cycling around the world" on the map. They must have packs and piles of tips and advice.
and especially, a well researched route.
they ran a well publicized "going away" in seattle
during thier first tour in 2000.
miles from nowhere (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0898861098/102-1530728-6298566)
This is the delightful and often humorous story of an around-the-world bicycle trip taken by two young people, Barbara and Larry Savage. It took them two years and 25 countries. Along the way, these neophyte cyclists encountered warm-hearted strangers, bicycle-hating drivers, rock-throwing Egyptians, over-protective Thai policemen, and great personal joys.
here are some "one-pan"recipes for camp! (http://bicyclelane.com/Recipes_for_Camp/recipes_for_camp.htm)
Your "tasty one-pan wilderness chow"
will leave friends wondering
when you snuck off to Paris
for cooking class.
good luck!
mike.

Claude Marthaler crossed Europe/Asia/North American/South America and Africa...the long ways...http://www.redfish.com/Yak/
Check out his site (above). He does a great slide show.
I think it took him 7 years.
Best,
