Ouch! I saw a white and chrome Raleigh Gran Prix at an Antique Store yesterday. Yikes, are they antiques already? This antique store had tons of stuff, so I think that it was just an item fettered in the net of some large estate sale purchase. It didn't have a price tag on it and was tucked in a corner. Looks like it was outfitted for touring or commuting - Huge, tall bike (it would fit me well :) ).

One interesting thing of note was a unique thick sponge seat with holes all over it. I have never seen that saddle before. Interesting.

I had a Gran Prix for a short while and just fell in love with it when I was just starting in bicycle commuting. It had such a luxurious smooth damp feel. It wasn't a sprinter, but you could coax it up to a decent speed at enjoy a swooshy smooth ride the whole way - like a V-8 Cadallac.

Anybody out there riding a Gran Prix? Is this bike worth pursuing? I am thinking about tossing out a $25.00 offer. Maybe they will laugh me out of the store, but something tells me they know it probably isn't going to move fast in an antique store where even the stuff from the 1800's has dust on it.

What do you think, folks?

My son has one he rides daily.
We also have a 1980 Super Grand Prix that rides very nice. Both are well equipped mid range bikes for the era.

I have 2 grand prixs (both 1977 models). One is getting "fixed" by me, the other by a friend.

Frame feels nice. A tad on the heavy side...but solid in a good way.

There is an antique shop near me that the owner buys whole estates to resell. So, whatever was in the house, goes into her shop. I have found a couple bikes there, but usually all she has are old neglected ballooners. She doesn't keep bikes around very long, since they aren't her main business and they take up a lot of room.
