Since I have decided to buy a new bike. I thought that a good long term goal for myself is to get into shape enough to ride a local Century next year. It is the Annual Tri-State Century Ride http://www.tristates100.com/ I should be able to do it and I will have a year to get into shape.

I am trying to motivate my wife too. My Bro-n-law and his wife are into biking and doing Tris so If I can get them interested they may help motivate my wife too!

Sounds like a plan. I *HOPE* to get in a century someday.

I will be 38 in october. My current goals are as follows. I will be attempting my first century early next month as part of an MS 150 ride. Next year I want to ride the katy trail accross missouri, the year after that when I get a physical after my 40th birthday I want a clean bill of health. I call it my fit by 40 plan.

Do your century but then have another goal to strive for when that is achieved. Good luck and come here often for encouragement and advice.

This is an interesting thread idea. My immediate goal is the MS City to Shore on September 29, during which I am going to ride my first imperial century. After that, I don't know. I've talked and written about a cross country tour in 2008, but I have physical issues that would limit my ability to bang out 60-70 miles a day, day after day. The City to Shore ride seemed an impossible goal in January; now it's just a matter of time till I ride 100 miles, and I don't know what I can do to top it.

Suggestions, anyone?

I think after a century, the next real challenge is back to back centuries, where you do a century, spend the night somewhere, and then ride home the next day. After that some short multi-day credit card touring trips, then move to loaded touring trips, etc. Mind you I am still working on doing a metric, which I hope to do this year, and then an imperial next year.

my longish term goals are quite a bit simpler.

when I started riding in june, there is a popular submarine sandwhich shop that is about 20 miles from my house, the goal ride is there for lunch and back. hopefully the weather will cooperate to do it on sunday.

There is a long bike path by my house, it's an old rail road, that was pulled up and crushed lime stone was layed down (this was several years ago) and the entire loop would be about 90 miles (roughly) the path is called the prarie path. My goal is to do the prarie path tour. basically it's a 90 mile loop.

It's the old name for it, back when the British Empire used miles, now I think the British still uses miles on roads, but the rest of the former empire use Kilometres like the rest of the world, and I am sure the British will soon, as well.

I do know one thing, riding my weight is a lot easier in the metric world, a one day 97km ride is a heck of a lot easier then a 215 mile ride:D
