Away from home, heavy training week, having problems with my PT.

Spun the crank, woke the computer planning to zero the torque, no signal from the hub. I have changed the batteries recently in the hub.

But wait, the computer is showing all kinds of weird data -- speed 48mph, ride time keeps running, watts flashing random numbers. I figure it's the computer and change the battery. Nothing changes.

I muscle open the hub (wrench 500mi away at home) and replace those batteries. Nothing changes.

I'm also not getting HR as an option when I scroll through the menu.

Any guesses for a miserable boy?

which version of the PT do you have and what kind of hub sensor is it (shark fin or other shape)?

I've had numerous problems with my powertap SL that I bought back in spring of '06. Since that time I've gone through two USB download cradles and two sets of sensors. Another guy I know has had similar problems with both computers and sensors going bad.

Give Saris a call on monday. Their tech support is great. The guys who handle the standard tech stuff will probably offer some suggestions and then to send you replacements parts if nothing changes. If you have a multimeter around, I'd recommend asking the tech guys to give you some tests you can do on the circuit board inside the hub. By checking the voltages at certain locations on the CB, you can further diagnose the problems. They won't mention this stuff up front because I think they assume most people don't want to get that into it. However, it can be helpful.

Also, if you know someone who has another PT system perhaps you guys can swap wheels, computers etc. to further test the system. Try a known good computer on your bike and see if anything changes. Or alternatively, take your wheel and put it on someone else's bike who has the PT setup and see if they can get any readings.

Thanks for taking the time. I had the computer search for a signal and everything was cured.

Is it in CPU only mode?

Scroll to Cadence function, hold select until WATTS disappears from the top line, then try it.

If that's not it, hold select down again until WATTS returns to the screen.

Other than that, I have no idea.

Thanks! It's working. My week is out of the toilet. Sad, I know.
