So I finished up my track bike today. I basically got an old Zeus frame and put my fixed gear wheelset on it, geared it 48/18 in track pitch, got a track crankset, TTT alu track bars. I got some Ritchey V2 clipless pedals because I'm riding without brakes so I wanted the extra power.

THIS THING ROCKS!! I was worried that I'd have trouble stopping, but since it weighs something like 18 lbs, I'm able to come to a dead stop from cruising speed in a couple of back-pedal strokes. Same with accelerating. I was up to cruising speed after just a couple of strokes. It turns on a dime, and makes NO noise whatsoever. I was trying to listen to the chain whirr, and couldn't hear it.

So are track bikes usually immensely superior to road conversions? This is the first track frame I've ridden and it kicks the hell out of my road conversion and geared alu/carbon road bike.

Not always....some track frames dont do street too well if theyve got track geometry, many have road race geometry and do very well. Many of the old raleighs and schwinns ive converted rode just fine, but they didnt have the snappy handling of a good track frame, but they are more comfortable out on the open road on a long ride.Just a generalization, ymmv.

i prefer the snappy handling of a track frame. when i rode my first real track bike i was amazed at how fast it responded to what i was doing. fast starts, fast stops, buttery smooth and quick turns.

i'm definitely more comfortable on my track bikes than on my road bike. most of it has to do with control and relying on myself instead of a cable and an aparatus for stopping. another part of it has to do with the fact that i can run pretty much any handlebar i want on my fixies without having to worry about brake levers and shifters (STIs are the devil). i run risers on my daily rider, and drops on my rain bike.

i set up my road bike to get the rear wheel as close to the seat tube as possible so i can turn faster. it comes in handy in heavy traffic.

I noticed a difference in an old Centurion frame I 'fixed' about 2 yrs ago and my Surly Steam...I like a tru frame for track/fixed
