Hello friends,

I know this isn't the right place to introduce myself but this forum is so huge.

I will be receving my first folding bike tomorrow, a Citizens bike and have ordered a Dahon single speed Boardwalk for my wife. The Dahon should be arriving by the end of next week.

Just wanted to say hi.

p.s. I am in Southern California (The OC)

Which Citizen did you go for, the rear suspension model or the rigid one?

The cheaper one with rear suspension. Is there a big difference in the quality of the two bikes?

I bought the rear suspension model for my wife for $199 (shipped). I've never seen/ridden the rigid model so I can't really compare the two...the website does say that it is 5 pounds lighter so I am a bit curious. At sub-$200 you can't expect much, but here are two things that greatly improved the ride for us:

1) tighten down the rear suspension to avoid bobbing
2) remove fenders and replace tires with high pressure tires (ie maxxis hookworms)

I don't know about replacing the tires but I was planning to remove the fenders. This is my first bike since I was like 12 or 13. I am in my mid 30's now.

Are the maxxis hookworms pre-inflated or something? Do they use a tube?

The maxxis hookworms are regular tires, as in, they use an inner tube. The tires that came with the bike are very "mushy" and make the ride a bit sluggish. Trading them out for high pressure tires really improves the ride of the bike. You might also want to invest in some new grips since the stock ones are a hard plastic material.

One of the good things about a budget folder is that you can do some upgrades and still keep the overall cost low :D

Almost bought the Citizen brand and since I couldn't find any thread about Citizen in the folding forum, decided on Dahon. Would be interesting how that bike is compared to the popular brands. Keep us posted.

Do I need to replace the inner tube too?

Funny you said that. I'm planning to do that with the cheapo folder I just bought. I'd like better tires and seat to start.

Personally, I think that new tires give the most "bang-for-the-buck" when doing upgrades on a budget.
