chunkyd, myself, and Ryan Hulce from over on the road forum did the Sizzling today. We also met scummer from here in Clyde's! By the way, scummer finished up the century i just under 6 hrs.......Not bad, Mein Herr!
I made just over 67 miles before right knee issues sidelined me.....again! I have it figured out though, it actually starts in the IF band and spreads into the external lateral right knee. chunkyd made 70+ miles before he had to give up the ghost. When you consider the fact that he's actually only been active on the bike officially since March, he did fantastic!:D Ryan finished the century up in about 6 1/2 hrs, I believe. I have a bunch of images and video to edit, I used the Handlebar Camera Mount I built, it worked great!!!!:D
Well, in the meantime, I'll be editing video tomorrow evening and images as well. You'll be able to share this ride a bit!http://www.comicguide.net/images/smilies/rad2.gifhttp://www.comicguide.net/images/smilies/rad2.gifhttp://www.comicguide.net/images/smilies/rad2.gifhttp://www.comicguide.net/images/smilies/rad2.gif

Sorry to hear of the problems. Good job on the miles though.
Sorry to hear about the knee issue. You can both carve a notch for a metric though.
Scummer, 6 hours is great! I recon it would take me about 8-10 if I even did one.
Chunky D that is some awesome mileage, especially if you've only been riding for 6 months.

Here is my ride report:
So I was planning on meeting Tom at the starting line but somewhat miscalculated my driving time and I arrived at the well organized event at 7:30am. After I hopped in my biking cloth, got my bike and gear going it was 8:00am. 100 mile riders were supposed to be on the road at 8:00am so I just made it :)
After about 1 km into the ride I realized I hadn't started my computer, d'oh. So I hit the start button and now everything was good to go. I took it easy for a while, warming up my legs, trying to get a rhythm going and then slowly picking up the pace. After a while of riding I settled into a 18.5-19mph speed which netted me around 18.0 - 18.1mph avg on the computer. That was just what I needed to finish the 100 in less than 6 hours riding time, which was my plan. Along the way I passed a couple of riders and flew by SAG #1 since my legs and nutrition were still in great working order. The scenery changes were from the signs of the different genetically altered corn and the name of the manufacturer to some nice areas with some short rolling hills.
SAG #2 was beautiful. Live music with some great cookies and other food in a really nice area. I hung out there for a few, enjoying the sound and in the meantime noticing a pack of riders, one member with a RAIN shirt and the other with a horribly hilly hundred jersey. I was considering riding with them but they took off before I had finished refreshing myself.
So I left SAG#2 trying to get my avg above 18 again, since it had dropped down to 17.7 because of some nasty headwind and a few rolling hills before. At around 33 miles into the event I passed a rider on his touring bike and noticed it was Tom :) I slowed down a little and started chatting with Tom about the ride and other stuff. He also let me know that chunkyD and Ryan were just ahead of him. So after our little chat I told him I'd see him at the finish line and pushed on. I zipped by chunkyd and Ryan, pumped a fist and yelled "Bikeforum represent" in which they both responded to "YEAH!".
After my passing manouver all of a sudden Ryan came flying next to my side. We had a quick introduction, he took a pic and let himself fall back to accompany Tom and chunkyd. I was so much into my own concentration and pace and didn't even notice he was riding a Cervelo :D
After a while I saw the group of riders again which I noticed at SAG #2 as they had some trouble on one of their bikes. I asked them if they needed some help and after they responded with 'Everything OK' I zipped by them. So my plan was to hang on their tail once they would pass me again and enjoy the slipstream they would provide. My plan almost worked but I needed to get some food in, so I stopped to get an energy bar out of my back pack and then they zipped by me. Darn it! I missed my opportunity.
I hopped back on the bike and kept going. Maybe I'd meet them on the next SAG and so I did. SAG #3 they arrived pretty much at the same time I did. So as I was munching on some food and water one of them asked me if I wanted to join their group which I happily accepted. Big mistake as I found out later.
We took off from SAG #3 and their speed was moderate at that point, nothing to worry about. We moved along at around 18-19mph and it was easy to keep up. But all of a sudden they increased the pace to around 20-22mph and it became hard work to stay in the pace line. I hung in there nonetheless. But the first rolling hill they dropped me like a hot potato. The guy in the RAIN jersey realized I've been dropped and he slowed down to reel me in again. So back in the group I was and I thanked Mike for the effort.
The pace was a little slower this time, maybe 19-21 mph and I was just OK to hang on. Next rolling hill with a 4% incline came around and BAMM, I was dropped again. Dammit, I thought, those guys are better trained then I am. But this time I made a solo effort to get back into the group again which I accomplished. The pace was high, too high for me, I just didn't realize it at that point and the 3rd rolling hill come around and I had been dropped again. Sonofa... WTF? I couldn't hang on any longer. I was done, beat and had nothing left to join the group again. So I let them get away and started a pace of 13-15mph just to recover and collect some energy. I was toasted and that about 67-68 miles into the event. 32 more miles? Oh my... my mind started to rebel, telling me to give up and just wait for the SAG waggon to pick my butt up. All kinds of thoughts raced through my mind at his point like: hilly hundred sign up? Are you totally nuts? Why am I doing this to myself? What is the meaning of biking? ****, that hurts. 1200km randonee next year, no way! And so on and so on. And in between I was hoping for SAG #4 to come around soooo badly. I needed rest. Lots of it. After a few miles of suffering like crazy the SAG stop finally came around and I was relieved to have made it. I plunged down into the grass and almost fell asleep.
To get me going again I downed a hammer gel and lots of water with a few slices of watermelon and a few cookies and after a loooong rest I hopped back on my bike. I felt OK again.
On the way to SAG #5 I saw 2 recumbent and a roadie stopped on the side of the road, with the roadie lying on the ground. I asked them if they were alright and they responded that he just had to recollect himself as he was totally spent from the hills and the light headwind. I saw him later at the SAG #5 and he was telling me that he was nursing some back problems.
So I made it to SAG #5 without much trouble and the last 10 miles before the finish line I actually felt a new jolt of energy and I was cruisin into the finish at 18-19mph with Tom passing me up in the SAG wagon shortly before the finish line :D
Tom, Ryan, Chris.. it was great to meet you guys and I enjoyed the after ride dinner with you guys.
Congrats to Ryan for finishing the 100 miler and big thumbs up to Chris for accomplishing a 70 mile stint!
I was sorry to hear that Tom had trouble with his body and he couldn't finish the 100 as I'm sure he was determined to do so. Hopefully you will recover for the Hilly Hundred. But don't push it or force yourself! Remember, it's the only body you got, so take care of it.

Right now, I'm looking at a Black Specialized Allez! My LBS will build me a custom set of Velocity Deep V's on 105 hubs, 40 spoke rear and 36 front for around $125 on top of the bike purchase after tradeback on the Alex Wheels it's equipped out of the factory with. This will get me into a really nice ride for under 1K!
