As far as rims go, Mavic makes some really sweet stuff, definitely take a look at them.

While Shimano is the evil empire. Mavic is the evil empire of wheels. But the wheels I use are frikken tanks, for xc use I'd reccomend Mavic crossrocs. Had to bite my tongue there.

I just bought a mavic 317 disc rim, i think that's the one ;) anyways that's pretty much all i ride is xc so i thought i'd give this a try out, so far i haven't had problems with mavic rims.

I've never had any problems with Mavics.. solid wheels. I had a set of 317's laced to XTR hubs that I rode for like 4 year without ever truing them, and I really bashed the crap out of them too. Now I'm riding Mavic X3.1 tubeless wheels. A bit heavier, and despite repeated bashing, I haven't broken or bent them badly. The rear needs to be trued, but it's not so far out of true that I'm really concerned about it.

Those x317's look ideal, but I'm now pondering the idea of making the jump to tubeless since im changing rims.

Tubeless is absolutely AWESOME in my opinion.... totally worth it. Just run Stan's tubeless tire latex fluid and you'll probably wear out your tires before you ever get a flat.

I agree with Jim311. Mavic tubeless are superb. I'll have to look into Stan's latex filler. I guess that is a US only product?

How light do you want to go?

Mavic makes some great rims. But don't limit yourself to disc specific. A standard rim is also fine. I run a standard sidewall rim up front, and I run disc's.

Take a look at the SUN Ringle SuvIV's. They are sub 400 grams per rim. Build them with triple butted spokes and alloy nipples, to the right hubs (American Classic makes super lightweight stuff). And you'll have a rim faster than anything else out there.

The XTR rims are nice, but the hubs are iffy IMO. I don't like their new "standard" for disc brakes. I'll pass on them. Plus, for a bit more money, you could get a KING hub built to a SubIV and have an equal weight wheel that engages much faster.

Chris King hub's are the ultimate way to go, if you can spare the bank for them.

You can get over here - I was thinking of trying it but I've been told you really want to do it on brand new rims and tyres. MBR often recommends it.

You can buy the latex fluid online.. I'm sure they'll ship worldwide for a price.

Ultimate XC wheelset IMO would be Mavic X3.1 (if going tubeless) laced to some Chris King ISO Disc hubs, using DT or Wheelsmith double butted spokes and aluminum nipples. If you're lightweight and want to go crazy with the cash, upgrade to titanium spokes.

I like aluminum nipples vs. brass because I'd rather pop a few nipples than pull one through my rim.

either way (alloy or brass) you are going to be screwed in the middle of a trail. Might as well go with the one that is less likely to happen randomly.

Most good rims have eyelets that prevent the brass nipple from ripping out of the rim.
