Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - NEW Bike

I want to get into riding fixies, my cousin and his friends have them and they look really interesting. I know quite a bit about MT. and BMX bikes but nothing about fixed gear bikes.

I was wondering what a good complete bike for a beginner that hopes to catch on fast would be.

I think I could spend up to $200 maybe $300. But I dont know what these bikes usually cost.

At that price you will have to buy used. Or maybe a Windsor The Hour. I would go used. Or you might be able to do a conversion.

You can definitely get an ok used bike for 2-3 hundred. Look on craigslist, or if you're in Philly area I might be selling one soon I will give you a BF deal on.

Any ideas of a bike that costs around $300? I really am just going to be cruising and fooling around on this bike. I will also looked into used bikes. I am in NY btw.

The Windsor The Hour looks pretty nice. I don't need a top of the line bike just something that won't break on me in a couple of weeks. And I assume I am looking for full cromo frame and forks.

I was looking at it and the cromo frame, sealed BB, and double walled rims stuck out as good points for this bike.

Any others or should I go with The Hour.

I bought a Windsor Hour, and I really like it.

Buy a brake from Nashbar for ~$30 and you're all set. Or just get the Motobecane Messenger.

For your price range, it doesn't really matter. You're not in the market for a super dependable ride; you want something cheap and now. So, with that in mind, go for it. Otherwise, if you want to work for it a little, save up for one of the nicer "entry level" track bikes (in quotes because it would make a good search term for finding the other threads on this issue), or put together a conversion. You could build a great conversion for that price.

and firgured that I will spend $300 and then IF I like it ride it till I need/want something better than upgrade. But I might get a big paycheck and spring for the motorbecane. OR get a $500 dollar bike. Cheese I think I made up my mind then when typing I change. Going to have to sleep on this one.

The thing with a fixie is that they are pretty much ALL dependable. No wanky shifters/derailers etc. to futz with. The only questionable item on the Hour dependability speaking, in my opinion, is the headset. And even that will work fine for a long time, it just has this slightest amount of play in it no matter how I adjust it that makes me nuts. But perhaps I'm just particular about my equipment.

That's a great point, especially if the OP springs for a better cog and lockring (unless this is the one that comes with the surprise DA cog?).

Another option to throw out there is that many LBS still have the '06 Fuji Track which they will sell at a discount since it is last year's model. So if you don't mind blue instead of black and gloss instead of matte finish, it's a great deal on a great entry level bike. $400 at my LBS, ymmv.

Well, lots of people complained about the bottom bracket too, but that's sort de rigeur on sub-$500 bikes, it seems.

it's basically your only option, and it's a better option than any of the other (even more expensive ones) options you're faced with.

Check out the Fuji, and if you like it, buy the Hour. It's the same bike!!!! And you'll have $100 extra in your pocket for a new brake, headset, tires, U-lock, fresh pair of underwear (you know you haven't sprung for a new pair in quite a while now....), lunch, and a movie for you and a date.

Fixies are primarily road bikes, which are almost always higher spec part for part than MTB and BMX. You could spend anywhere from $200-300 on a used conversion to +$10,000 on a carbon track bike (someone on here has two...). Check out the Mercier Kilo TT, it's a slightly nicer ride than The Hour for $50 more.

Make sure you get a brake, especially if you're just starting out.

haha I like the way you think (2 above). I am almost 100% on the Hour. Just still gotta check out the LBS

I bought my used pista for around 300, and it's great, and from what I can tell, better components than the new pistas, threaded stem, and it's not the same chrome or gang green that everybody sees everywhere either, as a bonus.

Keep your eyes peeled and you should be able to find something. If you stretched your budget a bit, I would think you could get an LBS to sell you a fuji track for around 400, since i've seen a few stores doing it.

Is this a reliable place to buy from. It is the only place I can find it, unless my LBS can order it in.

Bikes Direct is the only place that sells them as far as I know, so I'd say you're good to go.

BikesDirect is good. Many of us have ordered from them.
The Hour from BikesDirect is a great deal. It's a brand new bike (of course, you may want to tweak it a little when you get it... tension the spokes, etc.) for a great price.
Even craigslist doesn't have such great deals.

I will order soon then. I consider myself pretty good with bikes, all of my experience from building a pretty much custom BMX bike up of the last few years. So I can make a couple adjustments as I see fit.

Current Motebecanes have nothing in common with the Motebecanes of old. It's Taiwanese company now. Just an FYI.
