Bicycle Mechanics - best way to upgrade late 80's suntour superbe pro group
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I recently picked up a Fuso with mostly suntour superbe pro components. I was wondering how much of the current group set I could keep if I wanted to upgrade to indexed shifting (ultegra perhaps). Is it possible for me to upgrade just the shifters? Would that even work??

Shimano brifters won't work with a Sun Tour freewheel (I assume it is a freewheel) or cassette and the widest freewheels available in Shimano (or Shimano compatible) form are 7-speed. At minimum you will need a new freewheel, chain and shifters (assuming you can find 7-speed ones) and likely a front derailleur if you want to use brifters.
You might do better to sell the Sun Tour parts to a collector or to someone doing a period restoration and start wih all new components. Check out the C&V forum to see what interest there is in these items.
hmm my fears realized. this bike is turning into quite the hefty investment :[

I'll happily ship you a 10 speed cassette and 10 speed brake/shifters in trade for your superbe parts. PM me.

Upgrading an old frame, unless you have sentimental attachment or it is a really gorgeous frame, is rarely worth it, financially.
Well, I think the frame merits an upgrade someday but as of right now, I don't know if its worth the complete upgrade just for indexed shifting...

Well, you're right, that is a really gorgeous frame.

leave it just as it is. and save up for a modern bike with modern components if that's what you want. vintage road bikes are dead sexy. i've got a complete black 105 9 speed group that i'd trade (with wheels) for the complete group off that bike.

You don't upgrade Suntour Superbe Pro.
