Bicycle Mechanics - How not to remove ISIS crankarms

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

This evening I wanted to remove my ISIS crankarms to trace down a clicking that I think is in the BB. My crank puller isn't compatible with the new ISIS system, the "plunger" doesn't have anything to push on. I was sure I'd read on these forums that you could use a couple of pennies as a surface for the puller to push on...
Well, let me just say, that ain't the way to do it. Time to go out and buy a newer crank puller :crash:

Fortunately I don't think I did any permanent damage.
Get the correct Puller definately!! I did what you did on mine I actualy ended up stripping a few of the threads on my BB. I figured I was fine then went out riding next day crank arm fell off and basicaly threads on the one side of the BB were completely ruined.. Atleast was mainly downhill so I coasted holding crank arm in my hand but still had to walk quite a bit. So one day Mountain biking ruined.. $50 for new BB.. just so I could save the $15 and not buy a new crank puller, not worth it.

That sucks! Hopefully this lesson in having the correct tools only cost me 2 cents :)
First I tried the Dimes.. pennys did not quite fit right. Then used a bolt slightly larger.. not quite large enough :)
