View Full Version : Severe stomach pain after a mtb race

Yesterday I did a 50 minute long mtb race. It was over tough terrain with lots of steep climbs and I pushed myself very hard. About 15 minutes in, my stomach started to hurt. It felt like bad indegestion. It got steadily worse as the race went on, and by the time I finished, I was hurting so bad I could barely talk. I felt like I might vomit, but I never did. The pain kept up for over 10 hours after the race, all freaking day. This isn't the first time this has happened, I did 2 other races earlier this summer and both times my stomach hurt afterwards, although it wasn't as bad.

My breakfast consisted of 4 slices of toast and a cliff bar, so I don't think simple indigestion is the cause. Tums and pepto-bismal had no noticable effect.

Could it be dehydration? I might have gotten a little dehydrated during the race, but I drank a ton afterwards and it did nothing to ease the pain. Can this happen just from "over-exertion?"

I get sorta the same thing after a long ride (just not as bad); I think it's over-exertion (or not enough training). Mine goes away after a while. It's too low in the tummy for indigestion, BTW: stomach I think is up near the rib cage, whereas my prob is down by my belly button. Yesterday, I weighed myself, did a 26mile ride (hilly), drank about a liter of water on this ride (1:42, about 15mph average, 834' of climbing), and was the same weight when I got home (albeit, sweaty clothes), so I don't think I dried out much either.

I'm no expert, but I think it has to do with the digestive tract slowing down due to the extreme exertion elsewhere; and somehow that throws things off for a while. Maybe eat simpler foods / more fibers the day before? More training, perhaps?

I'd be interested the answer too.

I hear you guys, I have the same problem. I don't get it from running and intensity/duration seems to be the factors. I didn't always get it but now it seems to be an every ride thing. I've tried eating all different things, over eating, riding on an empty stomach etc.

I don't know if your cases, but I can't really characterize it as either a gas trapped feeling or upset stomach it's just a strange painful stomach pain that lasts hours after riding no matter what I eat etc.

It was so bad once I thought of going to the ER but next step will be a doc's appt. But I always just brush it off the next day when I'm motivated to ride again and hope it doesn't happen.

I know this is an old thread but if anyone has an idea of what's going on please let me know.
