Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

So, I know the majority of BFers rode the Cool Breeze on Saturday. And I read (repeatedly) all the comments on the air quality. Although I missed the group, I do not regret not riding. But by missing CB, I still had to get my CAM requirement for August. Fortunately for me, when I put out the feelers on the 100, Happylongtime (Joy) volunteered to create an Ad Hoc route in Palos Verdes. And lucky for both of us, Jason joined us (our boy toy for the day, yippee! :p).
We all arrived at the park in Torrance and took off around 6:30am. It was cool and remained that way all through the morning, along the bike path into Santa Monica and back. Joy took us on side streets I didn’t know existed that were wide and less trafficked. The three of us hit a good pace although we did run into some pedestrian traffic on the path (even though the path is clearly marked “Bikes Only!” That drives me crazy!). The morning air was perfect and our first 60 miles very pleasant. We stopped for a sandwich at Subway (and got to meet Joy’s hottie hot coach, Dan) and took off for the one longish climb of the day, PV East, around 11:00am. That was when we encountered the muggy heat. Unfortunately for Joy, this is her hardest obstacle when riding. The woman is strong as can be, but once she overheats, it hits her so hard. She climbed steady but felt dizzy at the top of PV East. We took the descent (sweet) down and back to Malibu Cove and then decided to chill out for a half hour in the shade with cold sodas and chips. Joy needed that, and I needed the incredible neck, shoulder and head massage that Jason gave me (I see him being on all future rides!).
Once we took off again to finish our last 30 miles, my legs began to fatigue. I had ridden 81 miles on Saturday (with the last hour of it in unbearable heat), so I was not, shall I say, fresh as a daisy. The idea of climbing in more PV heat did not appeal to me. But I knew I had enough leg left to do it, even if I had to snail up any hill we encountered. Jason flew up ahead of Joy and me. As we rode along, she admitted it was just too hot and she was again feeling ill. I admitted that I was a little warm too and my legs were fatiguing. So, we made it our prerogative to change the route, and Jason, ever the easy-going lad, was fine with it. We turned around, headed back down to the coast and into wonderful cool ocean breezes. Our last 20 miles were at a strong pace, and when we finished, I definitely felt it in my butt and legs! :o
Last but not least, chili spaghetti at Big Boy’s and more massaging (Joy got her turn this time too). Great day, wonderful company, and I “almost” did my back to back centuries (a challenge that I still have waiting for me in the future).:D

Sorry we missed you guys, Vance. My phone didn't buzz so I didn't get the text message you were out there til after the ride.
We hit the Palisades turnaround at 8:20am, after ME and Jason experienced much amusement at my Frau Frabissina impersonation ("ON YER LEFT!!!") and watching pedestrians leap off the bike path in terror.

Looked like a lot of fun. I'm always missing the fun when I come down ... but CB was no slouch either, so it's not quite so bad ... :D
I sent out the recovery ride thread a little late ... oh well.

:roflmao: Sorry, yes, I forgot to put this in my report (I'm at work, so I wrote that in haste). But Joy is hysterical. She is so itty-bitty (albeit hot and buff in all the right places), but she certainly can command attention when she wants. I called her the Bike Path Natzi. She would YELL, "ON YOUR LEFT" and I swear flocks of birds would take off from the beach it was so loud. The people she startled would jump about three feet.
But it was very effective. :D

In marked contrast to yesterday. :p
I recognize that garage door from when I used to do my Marina Del Rey Dock 52 ride to Rancho Plaos Verdes and back. I ended up not doing that ride so much due to all the traffic and almost getting taken out from cagers running the stop signs.

Hey! That was YOU I saw stopping to molest the cute little duckies on Ballona Creek!! ;)
(No, folks, that wasn't a metaphor or a euphemism- probably the only comment in this thread that is, or will be...)
You left them all there. right? I was on my "alone time" post CB recovery ride, and heading out to Redondo pier for an easy spin, or I would have stopped and said hello. One of these days...

That was us. I was leading the way and normally I'd call out, "glass" or "bump" but when I saw the six or seven half-grown ducklings blocking the path all I could yell was, "DUCK!" :roflmao:
We stopped (when with ME, one must stop at all wildlife) and I recall seeing a lone cyclist riding through them just a second later.. that was you! :D

I have a pic of those ducks and you may be in it, but I think I erased it by accident. :( I'll look at my camera when I get home. That would be too much if I got a shot of you just as about plowed through them, DScott! :D

It has nothing to do with pitch, silly. Clearly, Happytime is descended from the Sirens that Odysseus met on his journey home from the Trojan War. Irresistable and deadly if her song is heard by a male Homo sapiens.
You want further proof? Irresistable is easy... I've been in her grasp since when I first met her, when she told me she had a surprise for me and staked her claim. Deadly... my swimming sucks, and yet she wants me to swim (after running and cycling at that!) at the Hemet tri. Surely that will be the end of me.
I should have studied the great literatures of the world more carefully. When in the presence of Sirens, either plug your ears or have your shipmates tie you to the ship's mast. Go_Fast evidently studied the great works more carefully than I did.

M.E. seems to be descended from a relative of the Sirens. Also irresistable and deadly, but I haven't figured out how she plans to kill me yet. Best I can tell, it will be by distracting me from eating until I waste away.

Hemet is not a "real" tri. It's kind of hard to perish in a pool with a 150-meter swim.
