Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - New Shoes (what pedals to buy)?

Hello Everyone,

I finally purchased some shoes to ride in last night. I have been wearing tennis shoes with some plastic pedals with cages. Was not a very big fan of that setup. here are the shoes I purchased:

I was looking at Speedplay pedals to go with these shoes. Does anyone have any recommendations for these pedals. I like these because they have the adjustable float. I will also take any other recommendations for pedals.

FYI I have never used clipless pedals before!

Road shoes go well with road pedals. (yes I am being a smartazz)

I wear MTB shoes and like SPD pedals.

I have tried a variety of Pedals. Here are my observations:

Speedplay X2/X3: My first road pedals. I loved the ease of getting in and out. I hated, however, the horse shoe cleat on the bottom of my shoes that required the used of a Caffe Cover (make sure you get these!) or if you got just a speck of dust in the cleat you couldn't engage the pedal. The Float is nice hwoever, if you need it. I didn't.

Shimano Dura Ace: I finally got rid of the Speedplays for many reasons, mostly because I started getting bad hot spots on the bottom of my foot and thought i needed a larger platform pedal. I liked the Dura Ace pedals. Easy to use (although 2 sided would have been better). I however, wore out a million cleats and had to replace them because I liked to walk around. These cleats are for riding only!

Time Atac: I use the Time ZControl on my MTBike and liked the way the pedal worked. For my Montana trip I wanted to wear some "walkaround shoes" and not destroy another pair of Dura Ace cleats, so I borrow a buddy's Atac pedals. I love them. 2 sided, easy to engage, nice enough platform to prevent hot spots, and I can wear MTB shoes (I like Sidi Dominators). I've since bought a pair of my own. I don't care that I have MTB pedals on my road bike - I am not "Style Guy"!

I can also recommend Speedplay Frogs, easy to use, wider platform but for me, not wide enough on the mountain bike. I know many people who use these on their road bikes. I now use Time ZControl on the MTBike which has a nice platform. I can actually ride the bike with tennis shoes if just tooling around.

I have aso tried SPDs (did not like them), and Egg Beaters (OK not even surface platform for me).

I use the adjustable LOOK clipless pedals on my road shoes and sofar they've done a good job.
