Curious if anyone else is planning to go this year.
Enjoyed the ride last year (except for hurting my wrist two weeks before the ride and having to do a shorter route.)
May not do the 100 mile, but I should be up for the 75 mile.

CC, I'm considering that ride. I might do the 75 as well. I need to finish up early that day & get to a family thing later on.

I'm riding the one in Saratoga after labor day - it's a great century.

Do you have a link to the site? I've been thinking about starting to train for a century. Never did one before and not sure if I'll have time before this one to prep myself for it. If there are shorter routes, I may do that instead.

Thanks!

Here's the link

Lots of rides short of a century.
And it's a pretty flat ride. The biggest climbs tend to be the bridges.

Thanks! Look great! I've done the 5 boro bike tour before (40something miles) so I think I can shoot for at least the 55 miles on this one. I have plenty of time to get ready for it too.

Thanks again,

In the past the rides have been a few miles over advertised distances.

I'll be lead marshalling the 75 mile ride. Look for me on my gray Dahon Speed P8.

I did it last year and I'm not sure I'm doing it again. It was OK until it gets into Queens and then it really slows down due to the street riding. It also felt like all of the miles that are added to make it a century are in Queens so you get to see a lot of it and it isn't very exciting.

Maybe I'll do one of the shorter rides to avoid that. I can always loop back around Brooklyn if I want to do a full 100, but by that point I'll usually have had enough.

Hey, Lucky07, zacster
I really wanted to do the 100, but I haven't done many long ride this year. Only 4 rides over 62 miles, and I've just had a 3 week bike-break due to vacation, work and weather. If I manage 70+ miles this weekend and 80+ the next, I might still go for it.
Whatever I do, I'll start with the 100's. Enjoyed watching the sunrise on the Brooklyn Bridge.

i agree... the queens stretch is rough. i liked it the first two times, but i'm not sure i need to see all that again. too much start\stop for my taste, and traffic is a little heavy at times.

once i get to astoria park, the last thing i want to do is venture up through the bronx and back into manhattan, so i usually bail at the 75 marker and head home. i end up with about 85 miles or so and end the whole thing a couple of hours earlier.

For someone that doesn't do alot of long rides, do you think the 75 will be too much for me? I was going to shoot for the 55 but I love a good challenge. I just don't want to pass the 55 and then not be able to make the 75.

I'm liking the 'start with the 100's, end with the 75's' idea more and more. The idea of stop/go urban century has lost some of it's appeal for me after doing the Montauk rides and a couple of rural centuries.

The 100 is definitely worth doing as a first century though. Good rider support, very few hills/climbs, difficult to get lost, etc.

taz, if you've done a 50 mile ride recently, you can do 75. It's just more saddle time.

How long a ride is long for you? If you can manage a 60+ you should be able to do 75 with no trouble.
They follow the same route to Canarsie. About 30 miles into it. You can decide at the split.
Take your time at the rest stops. Load up on food and drink. Pace yourself.

I've done it twice and found it to be a somewhat more difficult - if attempting to keep to my usual century tempo ride, or a long century if being smarter about it and slowing down the pace a bit. This was all mostly to the extra energy expended with all the stop/starts (in Queens mostly).

Thus for a newbie, maybe be aware that it takes longer to finish then the Tour of the Hamptons, by comparison.

Or skip the Bronx, which was the least favorite section for me and ride the pedestrian bridge from Wards Island back to Manhattan on the 75

Most of the route is within a mile or two of a subway station.

I didn't register so I'm just gonna crash it, not sure how many miles I'll be doing since I'm probably going up to bear mountain again the day before so that's a whole day gone and I want at least a little time with my gf during the day on sunday.

No. Only a few thousand riders, starts are staggered and groups spread out.
Last year the start of the 100 pretty much took over the streets of Manhattan, but that was around 6 am.

Pretty much. But it is Sunday morning.

Don't know about the 75 ride, but last year the 35 route was nearly deserted except for around the GAP.
Much of the Brooklyn section seems to be on the path along the water.

It's a nice ride; enough bikes that the cars will know you're there, but not so constipated as the 5-boro ride in the spring - less time wasted standing around and baking in the sun at compression points.

we'll be doing the 55. wanted to do 75 but this has been a rough year and we have barely gotten any long rides in, so we're playing it safe. See y'all there!

I'm doing the 100. It will be my first century. I've never rode more than 70 miles, but I don't plan on taking it fast and I'm confident that I'll be able to finish.

Maybe if we all get together as we did last year I'd be more interested. I haven't done any really long rides recently, but I did 40 up and down miles yesterday and could easily have done another 40 if I didn't have a time constraint. 100 flat miles should be easy, but I don't really want to go to eastern Queens again. I don't mind the Bronx so maybe I'll do the 75, which I think shortcuts Queens, or does it? Maybe just 50. Whatever it is it'll still be fun. Maybe I should take my daughter, I just bought her a decent road bike.

My big issue this year is that my kids will all be in new schools and may need to get special supplies that weekend. I have to play it by ear.

We can meet up at the same triangle we did last year. That way, if you're crashing it, you won't have to run afoul of the TransAlt shock troops.

cc_rider

That triangle on Malcolm X worked pretty well. I'm willing to show up there for the 6am start.

zacster - If you want to skip eastern Queens, why not take the 55 route as far as the Ward's Island and follow the 100's Bronx route from there. Should come to about 75 miles.

They are still looking for a volunteer or two to mark the pavement from Canarsie Pier to Forest Park in Queens.

Anyone interested???

Thanks man - but I'm riding 27". I have a loaner which I can actually feel the resistance on but I have to bring some big heavy wrenches if I get a flat - my only hesitation. I may still just shoulder the weight and go for it too. I have a few days, if I go I'll throw extra in for a donation instead of waiting around all morning.

Edit: Nevermind, looked back a few posts. Lenox/Malcolm X Blvd. - same thing.

I may meet you guys there - looks like I'll help Avatar with marshalling duties and earn my keep (which I would have done anyway but didn't want to commit and not be able to make it). Have to find out when he starts and see if I may start off with you guys, grab breakfast and meet up with him in Brooklyn.

After bonking and with the asthma attack last year I'm looking forward to doing some damage this time around!

I am wondering how crowded the start will be. Can we leave before 6:00 if we have our bib?

Last year we met outside CP and went when everyone else did. Had to sneak out of the park to do it but wasn't that hard.

Lucky07

You don't HAVE to line up behind the barriers, but TransAlt will encourage you to do so. Personally, that kind of mass/cramped start always seems like multiple accidents waiting to happen. I noticed that the people that do line up behind the barriers tend to beef at the people who don't. Oh well.

Last year, I had my bib in advance, so I just went up to the table, asked for a cue sheet & rode up to the triangle.

The triangle is a block or two above the start line. The route goes right by it. Last year we just flowed into the riders as they passed by.

That's probably a good plan.
Can always add the Bronx at the end if you feel like going for 100. Shortcut back if you don't.
