Great Lakes - So folks, how are you coping with all the rain?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Are you continuing to bike and being careful when doing so or are you just attending to other activities? I live in metro Detroit, and it appears that there is plenty of rain all around the midwest U.S.

This is tough for me. I decided I wanted to add bike riding to my activities, mainly for fitness and I've been wanting to buy a bike for the past two months (probably more). I bought a bike that I'm happy with on Thursday, August 16 (edited) : ), rode it once that day, then haven't really had the opportunity to ride it since then.

I take it this has something to do with hurricane season? I heard of one hurricane on the news (probably looming over the ocean as I've yet to hear of it hitting), and there are floods in Minnesota, and I am grateful that I am not faced with that, but it gets to be a drag after a few days. I'm going to crack pretty soon. I did manage to make myself a little Scrabble sheet in Excel with the corresponding colors that matches the board to put my brainstorms on paper and make it a bit more manegable.

I'm creating custom database applications to pimp-slap off-the-shelf software applications that are not playing nice. I hate licensing....

Believe it or not I'm not a programmer.

It's either this or build wheels when I am at home....

Your post and bike FROM THE FUTURE is freaking me out, but it's good to know that we'll be able to get back on the roads Thursday.

I gave my bike a good cleaning yesterday and I'm thinking tonight I might actually have to *gulp* go to the gym and do some leg strengthening work. I'm busy enough at work to actually work all night too, so maybe I'll try and catch up on stuff so when it does clear up I can sneak out early.

I ride the rollers when I can't leave the house, or don't feel like getting geared up for the weather. Last night might keep me off the bike for a few days though. 15 minutes into it, I took a drink and started putting the bottle back in the cage, but it wasn't cooperating and I drifted off the side. I could only unclip my left foot, the problem is that I started falling to the right. Long story short...it was an ugly fall. My seatpost snapped leaving a nice 3 inch gash about 5mm deep and other various scratches on the inside of my leg.

Edited. So, my whole post freaked you out? I could see the bike from the future. You afraid of doing strength training? Don't be afraid.

Sorry to hear about your fall nvr. I don't have a trainer. I guess I'll be stuck to going on the treadmill and lifting.

What rain, we haven't got any rain in months. We do have lots of dust though. So come to Boyne City the land of no rain (we sure do need some). Well I have to go out and ride in this dry sunny weather. :D

Went nuts this weekend. Rode to work/school this morning. I am hoping it is not really bad this evening or I'll be bringing my bike on the metra and riding home from the metra station (3.5 miles).

Going to buy a set of SKS race blade fenders right after work.

It had stopped raining by the time that I left home this morning but the streets were still wet, so I wasn't able to ride one of the bikes in to work. Bummer, as I'm just starting to get that "summer is winding down, fall is here" feeling.

I'm hoping that the fenders will let me bike commute more often through the fall.

You are forbidden from this thread!!!

On a positive note, I think it's actually stopped raining around here, but could very well start raining again.

The power was out here for most of the day. Other than all the rain there really didn't seem to be any reason for it. there was not much wind, and no lightning. I spent some time this afternoon rebuilding my old commuter, but I still think I'm gonna ride the Marin to work tonight. The cartridge BB is already starting to make creaking noises under load so I might as well finish it off. Unless it really floods I might as well ride the bike I enjoy the most. I'll probably take it in next week since I have an issue with my rear wheel and they both should be under warranty. The bike is only 8 months old and has just under 500 miles on it.

Well the grass looks great so as soon as it stops raining I will have to cut it then I can go out for a ride. Went for a ride when I got home today and as soon as I left it started to rain again. Streets were already wet. Started to do a small loop by my house and noticed that some of the streets were dry no rain at all. Start going up a hill more drizzle or mist. I live close to lake Michigan with the wind blowing off it and as soon as I would get away from the lake and gain any elevation like 40 feet it was wet. So go up the hills then back down slow. Had to get out.

Lost 2 days of riding this weekend due to all that rain. As soon as it dries out and the sun is shining, I'll hit the saddle even for just few miles.

I'm crabby.
I'm fat.
I'm so desperate that I've taken to watching a video of psimet's latest project...his 10-part VHS series called "Nipples on Wheels"

It's sort of a Meals on Wheels spin-off, cottage-type industry where he drives around to repair riders' wheels on their home turf.

Brilliant really...

Haven't ridden since Saturday morning. Doesn't look like I will be able to get a ride in for the rest of the week. By the time I get home from work it has started raining again, or has just rained and the roads are to wet and slick. This is just down right depressing.

I am one of the lucky few BFNICer's that have actually seen Hip!
I can't remember the exact day but it was one of those magical Sundays in the summer of 06. With great anticipation we organized and waited the arrival the man himself, the atmosphere was electric...... And then it happened, around the corner, past the registration area, past the porta potties came a cyclist that looked like he was on wings, peddling effortlessly as if being blown by unseen winds.
For the next 100 miles I was in awe of this human being. Able to endure, with the aid of his trusty cycling coach...100 grueling Wisconsin miles....and then with a Chef Boyardee spaghetti dinner and a screwtop bottle of wine it was over.
One of those fleeting moments that a cyclist never forgets.
So yes----- There is a Hip and he rides like the wind!

MORPHEUS
Let me tell you why you are here.
You have come because you know
something. What you know you can't
explain but you feel it. You've
felt it your whole life, felt that
something is wrong with the world.
You don't know what, but it's there
like a splinter in your mind,
driving you mad. It is this feeling
that brought you to me. Do you know
what I'm talking about?

NEO
Hipcycler?

MORPHEUS
Do you want to know who he is?

Neo swallows hard and nods.

MORPHEUS
Hipcycler is everywhere, he's all
around us, here even in this room.
You can see him out your window or on
your television. Or on the radio. You feel him when
you go to work, or go to church or
pay your taxes, or do hill repeats. He is the world
that has been pulled over your eyes
to blind you from the truth.

NEO
What truth?

MORPHEUS
That you are a cyclist, Neo. Like
every other cyclist, you were born into
bondage, kept on a trainer that
you cannot smell, taste, or touch.
A trainer for your mind.

The LEATHER CREAKS as he leans back.

MORPHEUS
Unfortunately, no one can be told
who Hipcycler is. You have to see
him for yourself.

Morpheus opens his hands. In the right is a red Cliff Bar. In
the left, a blue Cliff Bar.

MORPHEUS
This is your last chance. After
this, there is no going back. You
take the blue Cliff Bar and the story
ends. You wake in your bed and you
believe whatever you want to
believe.

The Cliff Bars in his open hands are reflected in the glasses.

MORPHEUS
You take the red Cliff Bar and you stay
in Wonderland and I show you how
deep the rabbit hole goes.

Remember that all I am offering is
Hipcycler. Nothing more.

Neo opens his mouth and chews the red Cliff Bar. The
Cheshire smile returns.

MORPHEUS
Follow me.

I'm in the same area, and the 16th was only five days ago. It was OK on Friday, Saturday was a fabulous day for riding (what were you doing?), Sunday and Monday were washouts, but it looks OK outside today. We certainly can't complain about too much rain compared to what most of the country south of us has been putting up with!

I've got to get off my butt and get out there more. I've been commuting, but haven't done too many "just for fun" rides latley. I've been walking more though. The rain has brought it's friend sinus congestion along and the headaches are killing me. Decongestants are a NO-NO with my BP meds. Oddly enough a good ride clears me up a bit though. Working midnights is also not helping. On the plus side, my hours are getting cut at work so I'll have more time and energy for school and cycling! I haven't missed a commute since last year and now that my back up bike is back on the road I will have no excuse.

Friday was so so--I believe I was working in the morning. I was working Saturday in the morning until early afternoon. By the time I made it home, I was quite tired and then I believe the clouds came in after I had rested.

Definitely can't really complain compared to others. I suppose my mindset was set for a week of rain, as that was what weekly forecasts were predicting when it was only really just under half a week and therefore the dreary outlook on my part. I did get a chance to ride this morning! : ) Hope you did too! I shall not put too much into weekly forecasts from now on.
