Now I'm really scared . Hopefully scared enough to drop those last ten pounds that have been hanging on (seemingly no matter how much I ride or how little I eat). If I can lose those ten, then I'll be at 155 and hopefully be able to keep up with the Leaner Meaner Beanzer! At 165 I fear you'll drop me like the proverbial bad habit :D.

Crazy Rick! Last time we were on GMR, you smoked me like a pork sausage!:D

You really shouldn't smoke. It's not healthy.

What gutter? I don't eat pork sausages. Chicken or turkey are much better options.

Wow Joy, that was a real "Thread Derailluer!" You'd think this was a nutrition forum discussing the merits of Beans and Smoked Pork Sausage (or Chicken or Turkey)!
Anyway, back to the point . . . Yes, I did drop the Beanzer last time up GMR, but when (if? :) ) he really does lose those 25 lb. it will never happen again! At least, not likely. Plus, 2008 is supposed to be Beanz' Triple Crown Year One, and I want to be there to see that :).
Which . . . I won't be able to if I'm an hour or two off his pace on a double.

I'm coming to Joy's defense. For once and only once, she was NOT in the gutter on that one. Believe it or not, the woman may very well eat turkey sausage and not care for pork.
Now, back on topic...:D
You basically get it if you finish all 3 events in the given timeframe?
mkadam68
08-23-07, 02:46 PM
Yeah...just finishing all 3 events gets you KoM'd. The time limits are there just because the organizers don't want to be out all day or two waiting for me to finish.

That would be a week for me to finish:rolleyes::o

If you're under 25, you aren't allowed to use a triple.

I think that should be under 45!! Gotta give us old guys a fighting chance!!

I've already been thinking about a compact crankset. Any recommendations compatible with Ultegra?

I have a standard crank (53/39) with a 29 in back. And I used the 29 a fair amount on MC. If I were building up a new bike right now, I would definitely go compact, since it would let me go with a more efficient cassette.
But I only like climbing rides... since you race those crit thingies, maybe it would be better to just buy a climbing cassette?

Shimano R700.
My cassette is a 12-23. The middle ring is a 42.
Yea If I dropped the triple I would burn my knees on the first climb.
Vance those KOM events should have a weight requirement of at least 140lbs. Sorry maybe if you gained some weight they'd let you in :)

I've used my Shimano Ultegra compact the last two times I've ridden the Ski Lifts, and it worked fine and didn't hurt my knees. I'm 165 lb, and was using a 34t x 27t set.
Not sure if it will be okay for Mulholland and Heartbreak though. On the other hand . . . I did use the same set up on the Mt. Tam double and made it through that, so maybe it will be okay.

To train for Decker, I recommend the dubbed Fat Tire 50 route. It will for sure take the pain out of the Decker Climb for MC. Here's the ride- Start at Malibu Bluffs Park, north on PCH to Latigo. Up Latigo to Kanan, Kanan to Mulholland, Mulholland to PCH. Then PCH to Neptunes Net for two 48 oz Fat Tire Ales. Then PCH to Decker. Climb Decker to the top (it is a buzz kill though we laughed all the way up). U turn back to PCH, PCH back to Bluffs Park. Its 50 miles with 2-50 oz beers. Decker won't hurt so bad next time since you will be sober. Oh yes, the young lady that flashed us out of the sunroof climbing up Latigo did get the ride started off well.

I used a standard double on Breathless Agony, 39/25. I 'm not under 25 either, still under 45 though, barely!:D
I didn't think it was that tough. I was expecting it to be more difficult. OG got me for a second and Damnation alley got me for a mintue or two. But the climb up to Onyx was the easiest part of my ride. Not bad for being out of shape.
I plan on using the standard double for the KOM next year. Should be a piece of cake when I get back into shape!;)
I think the triple is a 28 or a 30. with 28/23 it still burns like hell on alot of climbs. I still wish I had a compact double, I dont really need the triple, I only use one gear on it and thats when it gets uber steep.

Okay, slapping a 13-29 cassette ($66 or less) gives me a low gear of 35.3".
A Compact crank (50-34, $250 or less) with my current 12-25 cassette, gives me a low gear of 35.7".
A Triple crank is not an option due to costs (new crank, brifters, & ft. derailleur).
Can an ultegra r. der. handle a 29t cog?
Anyone know where I can pick a cassette up cheap?

Don't know if there are any 13-29 standard cassettes out there that are Shimano compatible. I've never seen one.
IRD has an 11-28 and 12-28, if I recall correctly, although I've seen a few posts denigrating their shifting efficiency. SRAM has also just come out with a Shimano compatible 28 top tooth cassette. Both are pretty spendy.
A cheaper alternative, and one I'm considering, is buying a Miche 28t terminal cog, removing an intermediate cog, and using the spacer plus the Miche cog at the back of the cassette, tucking in behind the spider. You can also modify a 12t first cog cassette to a 13t similarly, thereby making your own 13-28. Again, I'm not sure if Miche sells a 29t mid or terminal position cog.
Technically, going beyond 27t exceeds Shimano's derailleur specifications (even for the long-throw derailleur, AFAIK). However, their specs are based on novice cyclist's propensity to cross chain. If you adjust your b-screw, and avoid cross chaining, I believe 28t is definitely possible, and you could probably even go up to 30t. This is based on what I've read and heard third-hand -- no personal experience. I believe Sheldon Brown has a decent riff about this on his site.

The 2008 Roubaix pro comes standard with 50/34 - 12/28(SRAM) so that combo should be good even with cross chaining. I've got the 12/28 that'll be going on very soon with my compact double, so we'll see ( I X chain all the time on my compact double)
I'm still going to use my touring bike triple for these KOM rides unless I somehow much stronger by then.

Oh my how quickly you change your opinions these days.... guess your just calling your self a poseur now you poseur. For everyone that always asks me why I hate this guy so much its because of his stupid crap like this. He comes on and talks all sorts of crap about certain people, riders, styles of riding, gear and then he forgets about it and contradicts himself and doesn't even realize it. Get a Life and go back to racing your toy car in a straight line...

What works for me instead of a triple is an XT long throw RD and a 11-34 cassette. That combo will allow this mid-50's clyde to pretty much climb anything. I throw that combo on when I'm doing super steep climbs with lots of miles. As I continue to lose weight and get more saddle time, I hope to retire the XT combo. Otherwise I just ride my 12-25 cassette, with a ultegra rd.
