Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - 1" stems - do they exist?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. So I recently aquired a track frame - 1" threadless, that I'm building up. I was going to ditch the fork for a nashbar carbon one anyhow, but was unsure whether to stick with threaded or not. In all honesty I love the simplicity of threadless, but think quill stems look pretty cool. So I was mad wavering.
But what it comes down to is that I just can't seem to find any decent stems in either configuration. For quill stems you either have to dig through ebay or go with a cheaper Nitto - like a Dynamic. And for threadless you pretty much have to shim a stem, which is kind of lame.
Any advice fellow forumers?

dude, 1" quality quill stems are all over the place, look at nitto's higher line. So let me get this straight, you have a 1" threadless now? if so just get a 1" threadless stem ie. cinelli alter. if you wanted to convert to threaded you would need to buy a new fork, headset, and stem. so just save some cash and stick with threadless if you like it.

I have a frame and fork at the moment, and I'm going to ditch the fork anyway. So starting from scratch so to speak.
Also, I don't want to spend a bunch of money on a stem, which is where I'm coming from I guess. I've been threadless my whole life, and finding a stem for nothing was always in reach. Maybe I should just buckle down here.
And can someone point me to an online store with a good selection? I've only been finding one or two here and there.

It's not like I have a shortage of threadless bikes... maybe it's time to cross over to the dark side for a while.

if you are gonna get the S.U.L just get a threadless, it will be stiffer and generally nicer

tell me about some great 1" threadless stems besides the alter.
I don't doubt they exist, but I've been looking and haven't seen anything great.
it's not a big deal to shim a 1 1/8", but i would prefer 1" threadless.

I have to say - I never appreciated my Bianchi Pista threadless stem before - I want another one! Preferably in black, lol.
Don't anyone have experience with these?

Looks convenient. Dropped for fast days and up for tooling around. I worry about flex and general lack of stiffness though. Of course, the Look Ergostem is nicer, but that's $200.

"700c wheels - do they exist?"No need to be snide - 1" stems are clearly rare. Most of the advice in this thread is just to shim a 1 1/8 stem.
That's probably what I'll end up doing, but still, that's kind of annoying.
What's wrong with shimming the stem? It makes zero difference but probably results in cheaper costs for you since 1" is not mass produced like 1 1/8" is.

don't most 1 1/8 stems come with shims for use on a 1 inch tube?

Depends on manufacturer. Used to be common, now not so much any longer (even though they're still making 1" threadless bikes).
You can get after market shims but it can be hard to find the right one (so that it actually looks right) as stems all seem to have different heights.
I really like the ITM Eclypse 1" stems. Look quite classy once you deal with the logos. Think they're strictly NOS/2nd these days though.

Are you incapable of finding any of these yourself? Or is it that nothing looks "great" to your discerning eye?

I used one for a little while. Switched to a forged stem after the first time I took it up a hard climb. Creak, creak, the whole way.

I love Nitto Technomic Deluxe stems. Pics don't do it justice.

There are adjustable stems with a splined retention system, and adjustable stems with simple friction systems.
The splined ones are reliable, solid, and heavy. I've taken one mountain biking without problems
The friction ones are deathtraps.
I don't know which category this falls under.

Dimension 1-1/8 stems come with a shim, so use a 1-1/8 cap instead of the 1 inch one that comes with the headset.
