Commuting - 2008 Trek Soho 4.0

Looks like many of the "faults" of the soho have been addressed for 2008. Higher spoke-count wheels and now an alfine-equipped model. For a retail of $1099 it doesn't seem bad. I'd definitely consider it if I were in the market for this style of bike.

After they get done bumping the price up by 20% for the Canadian market it puts it out of my price range :(

Strange that - the US dollar is only worth a nickel more but once something crosses the border oooooh watch out, it's gotta be marked up much more than that :(

Anybody tried to mount fenders on one of these? I would love a bike that has disc brakes AND lets me mount fenders and my topeak rear rack without hiring a machinist to fabricate mounting brackets.

Yeah, the Portland is a nice looking bike. I wish they'd get rid of those ridiculous clip-on fenders though!

I've never understood the appeal of clip-on fenders myself, but they must be a selling point to someone or they'd leave them off and save the $20.

Fenders/racks are easy. Note the rear caliper is between the seat and chain stays(like my Crosstrail) so it's out of the way. The fork has braze-ons on the sides,just mount the struts to these(did this on my old Sirrus Sport Disc). May have to trim the excess,but that's only a few minutes with a Dremel.

Thanks for the info, I've been patiently looking for the perfect start for my new commuter bike, and I may have found it. Time to start test riding (and looking for the$)!

The Soho S is so, so, so hot. I'm waiting for the LBS to get one in.. :)

it's funny how these a few of these city commute bikes are named after nyc areas/streets. there's the giant bowery (bowery st. downtown nyc) and then there's the soho, an chic area in downtown nyc that used to be warehouses, then art galleries, and now finally higher-end clothing shops and a place where tourists can congregate.

i like this bike, but i wish it were cheaper.

Maybe it's just my noobiness talking here, but why don't the various manufacturers make a bike with a front disc only leaving the rear with an "old fashioned" caliper?

Most of your stopping power comes from the front, and most people put racks on the back - seems like that would be the best of both worlds to me.

If they sold it as a frame, I could build it up as a SS disc bike with a disc carbon fork. If only...

both nice bikes! both too rich for my blood! the new look of the portland is nice but those fenders have got to go. that would make a sweet SS commuter.

God I hope not... I really think the quality of Brooks saddles has dropped over the years. If every "follow-the-trends" cyclist out there decided that they have to have a Brooks saddle; it could result in the company increasing production at the expense of an even further reduction in quality.

Some people say it's the quality of the COWS that's dropped. Demand for Brooks saddles has definitely increased, and I think it's only going to keep increasing. Raleigh is speccing TWO 2008 bikes with Brooks, FFS. The Sojourn and the One Way will come with B17s. The One Way looks like it will have the pre-softened version even. I understand the appeal of that, but I've heard they sag pretty early. I'd prefer to break mine in the old fashioned way.

Has anyone learned from their LBS when these are likely to start showing up? My bike store had no clue (but that's a more general problem with them...).

How is it that different from the FX line?? Alot for $$
