Northern California - Ok, what did you buy???

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Nice! Where do you commute (from/to)?

I commute from North Natomas to Downtown (5th & O). About 9 miles. Mostly a pretty easy commute. The worst part is San Juan overpass. :notamused:

 That's my warm-up "hill" when I head that way
I wish I worked downtown. I'd probably commute more. I live in North Natomas also but work in Rancho Cordova :\

And as they say: "You can't get there from here." Natomas has pretty good places to ride around the neighborhood, but it's hard to get out. You can probably take the River trail most of the way (depending on what part of Rancho Cordova you're working in). But it would be a long ride.
I'm finally strong enough to do the overpass without going to my granny gear (still pretty slow tho), but I hate the cars/SUVs/big ol' pick-up truck zooming by at 50 or 60 mph!

Yeah I've done the ride a couple of times. I go in to Discovery and ride the trail allllllllll the way to Rancho, then cruise in to work. 23 miles. Then of course I have to shower at work (we have a full locker room), etc. SO, in the summer if I leave at 6, I get to work at 7:15 or so, shower and stuff and hit my desk just before 8. Instead, I could get up at 6, drive to work by 7, come home at three and do a nice long ride till 7pm if I want, and that's what I usually end up doing ;)

I have an Avid mechanical disk brake for our tandem. The disc rotor is prone to warping, especially on long, technical descents (turns) where I have to continuously bleed off speed. My LBS ordered a Hope "floating disc" that they said was "killer". It is supposed to stay true. I'm excited to try it.
Um, a new Jamis?
http://home.comcast.net/~96omi/Jamis/IMG_1223.JPG
Very nice! I have the 2005 model and have put 13,000 miles on it. The wheels have really been the only weak point: i had to rebuild the Sora hubs at ~6,000 miles and destroyed the rear Alexrim at 10,000. After that I upgraded to Mavic open pro/Ultegras but almost everything else on the bike remains as-is.
Where did you get it? It seems like there are more Jamis dealers around than there used to be, but I haven't seen an Aurora (or a Sputnik for that matter) on the rack anywhere.

I bought a new jersey. Specialized Activate in white/black.
The jersey:

Ghetto image showing the color scheme:

I decided that the white jersey probably wouldn't work out well in the mud when I'm mountain biking, so last night I bought the black one too :o

I didn't buy this, I have it now. I somehow cracked the rim on my commuter bike.
I have a Mavic 717 on order and will reuse my XT hub. Still, not exactly a "fun" purchase.

Pearl Izumi Barrier Jacket. It's a discontinued model (2007, I think) that has been replaced by the Gavia. I have used it twice already and love it. Superb wind and moisture protection and it's cozy in the type of weather we have these days.

A++ Would buy
I bought some Pro Race 3 with red sidewalls tonight. I got to within about a mile of my place when my front tire blew out. I tried to patch the sidewall and replaced the tube, but the split was too big. Under like, 75 psi the tube was bulging through.
About 1000 miles on that tire. It had tons of life left in it!

New Rx sunglasses. Lenscrafters had these but they don't do the lenses so I'll have them in a couple weeks. Cashed in on some class action settlement coupons and vision benefits from work.
I really liked some Oakleys but they only come in polarized lenses (not good for cycling where the roads might be wet). Also these Maui Jims are a little more sturdy.

The photos kinda suck, but I got answers to the important questions and have seen enough of these to have a pretty clear idea what it will look like (clean lines, understated, gorgeous ). And I have only ever heard good things about how they ride.

A great guy and super mechanic built this beauty up for my 10 1/2 year old daughter.
It is a 48 cm Schwinn Traveler III, one of Schwinn's "ultra light" cro-moly steel frames from the early 80's
It has a Bontrager triple crank, Sora 8 speed shifters and all new rear cassete, tape, cables, housings etc.
Very sweet no?
I am protecting the anonymity of the builder so the Classic and Vintage Mafia does not come after him for desecrating a vintage Schwinn.
Lets just say we know him around these parts as "l'uomo di capo grande"
