View Full Version : Ok, what did you buy???

Heh you guys are gonna hate me ;)

Well I bought a nice 2007 Black/raw Al (silver) CAAD 8 a couple of months ago, and it has sat in my room up until last week.

In the past couple weeks I have bought:

- 2007 Campagnolo Chorus Groupo, but with Cantaur UT Compact Cranks and FD for aesthetic reasons (and saved $250), and Mavic SSC brakes (for better braking, and aesthetics ;) ).

- Custom Wheels (not here yet): 30mm Niobium Rims (Black with mach. braking surface), White Industries hubs (polished silver), Sapim CX-Rays (silver w/ silver nipples). Triplet laced rears (24 spoke, 16 - 3x drive side, 8 - 1x non-drive side), 20h 1x fronts.

- Deda Newton Anatomic in Dark Metal Polish and black Fizik bar tape to continue the black/polished metal scheme

- Michelin Pro Race 2s in black (black/dark gray)

- Cateye CD300DW (again black/silver everywhere ;) )

- Look Keo Carbons

- Thomson X-2 Stem

- King SS Bottle Cages (x2) (polished raw metal)

- Plus all other assorted little things needed when building a new bike :)

PS - I also got a tail light for my CAAD 4, since it is now my rain/commuter bike.

Nah, I don't hate you at all. Why would I?

kster, when you get that mounted up, do post up a pic of it in action. I'm curious and since winter seems to be approaching fast I need to add a headlight and taillight to my commuter. The above pic is impressive, but would like to see real world pics too...

Here it is mounted:
http://photos.imageevent.com/kster/bike/IMG_4658.jpg

I don't have any shots with the light on but it's very bright. I used it on the lowest setting this morning and it still lit up the road behind me. I'm keeping it pointed downwards so I don't blind drivers with the bright red beam.

Does it have a blinking mode?

kster

Yup, but only on the highest setting. The modes:
LOW -- MEDIUM -- HIGH -- HIGH WITH BLINKING

I found this frame on Ebay. Lugged, Columbus MAX steel, in my size. I'm a big boy, and I always wanted a MAX frame...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v734/genejockey/ffd5_3.jpg

So, I had it repainted,

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v734/genejockey/DSCF0540.jpg

And built it up with Chorus and Centaur components...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v734/genejockey/BatFinal2.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v734/genejockey/BatFinal5.jpg

Then finished it off with a white saddle and bar tape...

And THAT is how I spent my summer, and also spent a bit more money than I expected to...

Thanks! It's even prettier in person - the red is not really as orange as the pictures make it look.

D&D did the Battaglin decals, and I got the Columbus MAX decals on Ebay from a bloke in Oz. The cutouts on the fork, rear dropouts, and brake bridge were done by hand by Rick at D&D.

The one thing missing is the head tube decal, which is a larger version of the logo on the fork crown and dropouts.

:) That is great to hear. I'm about the same lbs. (depends on the time of year) I was a little hesitant after reading some not so great reviews on roadbikereviewdotcom. The guy at Livermore Cyclery assured me that they are killa!

please excuse my naivete but what is the big fuss over Thomson?

If you've ever held a Thomson in your hands, you can see the detail that goes into machining one. I personally like them because they fit my bike and me. But the craftsmanship is truly the one thing that places the Thomson posts above the competition.

As far as my newest acquisition, a set of chainring bolts to replace those that broke. These are the Dura Ace kind, also aluminum. I have them hand-tight for now, until I can get a replacement set of steel ones that I can evenly torque.

I did around 82 miles over the weekend (including the labor day ride) and I like it a lot. After riding a Specialized Allez (Aluminium, +- 22 pounds) for 2 years, it feels like a nice upgrade :D

I bought an older (late 70's?) Raleigh Grand Prix (including old saddle bag) last week.

I've already confronted one of my biggest bike-related fears--tires/wheels. I bought the bike with a flat and had to replace the tube because the valve was missing, and then I broke a spoke the other day and had to replace it and true the wheel--and it wasn't as bad as I imagined it would be.

Sorry, no pics.

For $130, I consider it cheap insurance if it makes me significantly more visible. The Dinotte taillights blow away everything else on the market for brightness.

If only Thomson's setback post weren't so UGLY!!

I lust after a zero setback model for my Bianchi, which has a slack seat tube and needs zero setback. But unfortunately, the FSA that's on there now simply refuses to stop working adequately, so I have no excuse to plunk down the $75+. :D

Oh, and my latest purchase is a boring cyclocomputer - Cateye Astrale - for the Battaglin (see above). Not wireless, doesn't measure HR, doesn't measure power. OTOH, it still registers my speed and cadence when I'm riding over the underground powerlines on Canada....

The Shimano's were from Nashbar (Shimano 07 Ro85 Road Shoe) for $85.
The Adidas were on a clearance pile at the Redwood City Performance. The price at the register was $79 but the clearance pile had an extra 20% off. Plus I get 10% Team Performance credit of $6.10 back. It must have been an online order return because they don't usually stock that model of shoe.

Nice Specialized Tarmac Expert, zorrov999! My wife has an Expert from 2 years ago with the Team Gerolsteiner colors, and she finds it a lot more comfortable than her 10-year old Trek 1400 aluminum. That Dura-ace rear derailleur coming stock is a nice upgrade since my wife's bike was full Ultegra. The only change we made was to replace the wheels with Easton Ascent II's.

I just bought an Ultegra 12-27 cassette to replace my 12-25 on my Merlin since I want a slightly easier gear on some of the steeper pitches of the local climbs in the area. I might replace my Dura-ace 53-39 in the future with a compact crank, but I already have one on my Trek, and the Dura-ace crank is too pretty to replace for now.

All within the last 3 days for my Specialized Langster... the wheels were after a car incident... unplanned :(

Closeout for $230... and another $40 to get them tomorrow.
http://wheelandsprocket.com/merchant/500/images/large/velocity_track_360.jpg

$100 for the set... after discount.
http://www.discountcyclesdirect.co.uk/images/BR6600I49.jpg

Had some chainline issues before my incident. ($22) Ripoff but I needed 'em quickly.
http://online.qbp.com/6SPsvm45/prodl/HU5511.jpg

My old one sucked, I think it was crooked or something, hence the chainline issues. ($16)
http://online.qbp.com/6SPsvm45/prodl/FW1205.jpg

Some pedals ($30) that I have no idea what they are, but snazzy. And some metal toe clips ($6). None of which I can enjoy because of the lacking of a circular wheel. I've put $550 into my bike and I got the bike for $400. This thing better last a while! :) I have another $400 or so to get it the way I envision the bike. But it can wait... and my credit card says that it HAS to.

Hey, did anyone else overspend their bike budget (or overtax their spouse's patience) and then find themselves having to get another year out of things that could realy stand replacement? Having bought two bikes this year, I now have to make my 9 year old cycling shoes last another year, despite the fact that the velcro is coming off the straps.

I've been looking to build/buy a bike that I could put a rack on get groceries and just carry stuff. After trawling Craigslist I came upon this Schwinn Super Sport. The top tube is longish at 54cm ( usually ride a 52.5cm) but with the short 55mm stem, it felt OK. I figure I would set it up with an 80mm stem instead of 100mm and still have the same reach but less bar drop than my road bikes. With 34,46,52 chainrings, 13-38 freewheel, and stock front and rear racks, it's got plenty low gears and rack space for loaded touring.
