BMX - weight, whats the difference

Im new to this and im going to get a freestyle bike and all the bikes i have found are from 30 to 35lb. I have found light parts for freestyle bike and was able to get one down to 15lb. why are they so heavy and which ones better?

Very strong bike, using chromoly, and lots of it. Thats where the weight comes. Simple things like changing seats and seat posts can take lbs off, diff wheels ext. Its up to you for what you want, you can always take weight off later, when you have the $$ becouse you will need lots.

I doubt a 15lb bike would hold up to anything more than hopping off a curb. Don't worry too much about weight if you're just starting out, 30-35lbs is pretty good. The key issue is the weight:strength ratio; if you're riding flat you can get away with less strength (and thus weight), but if you're gonna be hucking it off 10 foot drops then you'll need something stronger (and heavier of course).

Look out for the following: 4130 Chromoly frame and forks, 48 spoke wheels with double or triple wall rims, 14mm axles, three piece cranks, and generally good quality parts (Odyssey, Dia Compe, Dia Tech, FSA are some good parts companies). Of course it depends what you want the bike to do (ie 14mm axles aren't neccasary for flatland, 36h front wheel is OK for dirt). If you're just starting don't worry too much about being specific, just get a good bike with four pegs, two brakes and a Gyro.
