Seems like a lot of time and energy wasted on a poor design and not thinking through completely...
One could have easily bought a flip flop hub and put a reverse freewheel on the left side instead of all that wasted effort machining something that only holds the gear to the wheel via 3 spokes (can we say BROKEN spokes?)
Also the motor mount it horrible, coupled with the fact that he didn't have the sense to put the chain tensioner on the untensioned side of the chain when under load.
With a freewheel the front side of the chain would never receive much if ANY strain and would easily hold the chain tight. The guy had some good ideas and obviously the machine shop at his school at his disposal but he didn't have the forethought to completely think through his designs before trying to build them, the chain tensioner makes this harshly apparent.
