Hello, new to the forums here. What bike do suggest for a recreational rider (3 times/week)? I'm more for front suspension rather than full suspension. Thoughts?

without knowing anything about your location, riding style, terrain, and how far you want to go into mountain biking...its hard to suggest a bike.
few things though.....you have started with a good budget for a good hardtail (front suspension bike). also, you made the right decision by going with the hardtail route.
now, for around $1000 hardtail....my vote would go for Kona Caldera. but, thats just based on personal preference and bias.

I won't be going up any real big hills, nothing like Colorado. I'm 5-10 170lbs. I've been looking at the Cannondales lately. I've always like what they have made.

Cannondales are cool. Make sure the fit is right. If you like cannondale then thats what you should get.
I personally like the fact that Cannondales are made in USA.
No place on this earth is like Colorado....every place is unique. and every trail presents its own set of challenges, so pick a bike based on your local terrain. A good reputable local bike shop would be able to help you with that decision. Check a few bike shop, so that you dont get pushed towards one of the bikes that they are desperately trying to get rid of.
Check out your local bike shops and let us know what you find. Then it would be easier for the forum members to point out a suitable bike for you.
good luck.
