Commuting - Accidents

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

If it was my fault AND minor, which choice do I pick? :)

You need another choice: Afraid to vote because I'll jinx myself :)
If you count falling in icy conditions I've had plenty of minor accidents. ;)
Still haven't been hit by a cager, knock on wood!

I have had 2 small accidents and one big one (which I rode away from, injured but still on the bike) remember it is not if but when on a bicycle just remember how to tuck and roll :)

I've got a scar on my right arm from my wrist to the middle of my upper arm from being hit by a car in 1967. I was twelve then. It was a 16-year old kid in a 54 Chevy that hit me from behind. My arm caught on the wing of the big bird hood ornament, and peeled the flesh off all the way down to the bone. It took 125 stitches on the outside and 18 on the inside to close.
But hey, I still ride!!!!!
I had an accident yesterday it was minor but I did wreck but no damage to the bike I couldn't repair with my Topek. I have had accidents where all that happened was I swerved and fell down but no damage other than my pride. I have had accidents where my bike ended up under a car but I was fine. I once broke my arm, damaged my bike but it was my fault, no cars were involved. I never had an accident during the full moon.

I second the tuck and roll advice. It will save you from a lot of pain and suffering. Take it from one who has fallen a lot in many activities. Tuck and roll.

Hit 3 times by cars and hit once (narrowly missed by another) by a person riding a bike on the wrong side of the road. All accidents were the clear fault of the drivers of the cars and there was no possible way I could have avoided the collisions.
The bike/bike collision ruined my wheel, fork and frame but I only had bruises, 2 cars were just minor but 1 car sent me flying and I landed badly tearing a posterior cruciate ligament that never healed right.
I blame my family doctor for not diagnosing the problem correctly. I finally had surgery 1 year after the accident but it only helped some. I'll always wonder if I had a prompt, proper diagnosis if my knee would be fine now.

Just had my first crash yesterday.
A car pulled in front of me (must pass syndrome) and went to turn left (right in the US if that makes sense) and he halted suddently as the lane stopped moving. I didn't have time to stop or swerve... bang right into the back at 30km/hr.
Helmet took most of the damage... one slight black eye, broken glasses, bent wheels and handlebar but overall very minor. The car boot had a human sized dent in the back and a broken tail light...
The driver was very courteous, stopped immediately, we both apologised and made sure everything was OK.
Picking the bike up after the repairs tonight and back on the road tommorow with a bit of extra wisdom :)

I've had a few minor ones while commuting, mostly caused by boneheads in cars (I've been hit four times) I think the worst commuting "injury" I ever suffered was a broken spoke. However, my major ones always seem to be self-inflicted on non-commuting rides.
we both apologised and made sure everything was OK
What were you apologising for? I make a policy of making the driver feel guilty for their actions and never show any sympathy for them (if they were in the wrong).
Another member from Adelaide that now makes 3! woo hoo!:D
CHEERS.

Hi Dutchy
With these growing Adelaide numbers we'll soon be able to take over the world! :)
The apologies were more for overall concern for each other (and the car/bike).
The driver certainly understood he made a silly decision and agreed he wouldn't have done it if it were a car. The point concerning the accident was made.
With the adrenalin going through me I wasn't thinking the clearest. Then I was confused why everything got blurry... the glasses! :)

Oi!! You've got to get past us Tasmanians first! Hey Ants, Aggressor, Jaimie65 and all, this is a call to arms!:fight:
Actually, I'm not sure I like the sound of all these accidents the Aussies are suffering at the moment. Ants, Chris, Adrian... you've all been in struck down in the past week or so. There isn't a process of elimination going here, is there?
We're going to have to set up a BikeForums Hospital here in Australia for you guys. Headed up by cbhungry, of course.

I'll be taking my bad luck on the road in December...
Be afraid...
Be very afraid...

A word of warning Chris L - by the time you get here the place with be chokkas with mainlanders with caravans and the like - easily spotted though hire car stickers, mainland number plates and frowns.
Watch 'em they come here to get away from it all and treat the roads like its peak hour in Melbourne.
As for Tasmanian drivers, indicators are an optional extra down here so assume they are asleep and chances are you'll be ok.

I think you're onto something there Rowan... I altered my time in this morning and no incidents, I must have slipped through the net.
Must be those damned terrorists :)

Thanks for the warning Jaimie, but really, it's nothing I haven't seen up here on the Coast already. I think the only difference is that up here the locals are even worse drivers than the tourists.

Being an ex Tasmanian, I would sooner criticise a Melbourne driver.
By the way, you won't get any replies from dead cyclists. Remember who comes off second best.............

I didn't find Melbourne drivers that bad when I was there last year - mind you I wasn't there for that long. I actually found Geelong drivers to be considerably worse. Mind you, coming from the Gold Coast, I think Adolf Hitler would look like a good driver compared to what I'm used to.

Back on topic:
I've had a few minor accidents, but none involving cars. They were all my fault. One was right after I got my clipless pedals and I fell over at a stop sign.
The (more) major one was when I was riding to the bike shop. It was raining, and I was just gritting my teeth and going for it, not being as cautious as I should have been. As I turned into their parking lot, a patch of gravel took me out and bloodied up my leg.
I try to be careful, and as I get more miles on my bike I'm getting better and better at not falling. :D

No accidents for me.. But I am praying to god that this thread doesn't jinx like the flat tire thread did several months back. I had a flat every 100 miles after that. :(
