Southern California - Angeles Crest yet again 8/25

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Okay, sounds good to me. Assuming there isn't anything too terribly pressing for me to do at work this Saturday, I hope to be there. Are there directions to the start somewhere?

I think Keith and some others are starting at the bottom around 6 or 6:30 and Bob and Christy are leaving Red Box early, maybe 7ish. I'm not sure if we'll catch them, but Keith will catch us.
Oh, and scvroadie, (Lee), said he wants to start at Charlton and do 75 miles. Charlton is a day use area about 8 or 9 miles further up Angeles Crest from Red Box.

I know you've been there before. I'm not sure of the best way to get through the city, but if you're coming from the south, get to the 2 from the 134 and take the 2 to the 210 and go right toward Pasadena, the first exit is Angeles Crest. Turn left and go up about 14 miles to Red Box road. If coming via 405 to 118 to 210, AC is about 10-12 miles from the 118. From your parents, just take the 210 to AC.
Yup, been there, but don't remember the freeway exits. So it looks like I take I-5 north to CA-2 north to I-210 east, and then exit Angelest Crest and head up the road until I'm there. Does that sound right? If I recall correctly, I have to buy a parking permit at the Shell station or something, no? Thanks for the directions.

Yeah, you got it. You can get an Adventure Pass at the Shell or some other stores like Sports Chalet. National forest websites have lists. I should look for a link.
Okay, cool. I hope to make it, but if I'm not there rolling at 8 AM from Red Box, don't go looking for me. Probably just means lab commitments kept me away.

I'm not sure when I'm starting, it looks like Grassy Hollow if I start at 8am and that's ok. Save some legs for GMR on Sunday. If I go to Wrightwood it will give me a chance to see whats on Newcomb's dinner menu on the way back. ;)

I'm thinkin' 8:00 is kinda late for a ride to Wrightwood and back.

What's with the dissention? If you want to ride with the group, start at 8:00. When you start suggesting different start times, it just confuses everyone. We have an e-mail list going around and this thread going and everyone has been told 8:00. If you want a different start time, next time when we first propose the ride, say it then. Or, start a thread for a ride and put whatever start time you want.
I can't figure out why anyone is concerned about starting early, unless they have to be somewhere.
If you guys are really concerned about time we could turn back at Grassy Hollow.

Big John has spoken! ..... :fight: ... :D
By the way, Keith and Manny are starting at the bottom at 6:45. Sounds like their plan is to do mt. wilson, then Dawson's, but turn around from there for an even 100.
I plan on being there, starting with the group at Red Box and going wherever they go. Can't wait. :)

I may as well throw my plan out there . I plan on getting to Charlton flats at around 7:15 and riding down to meet whoever is riding up from Red Box . Last time getting to Red Box made for a late day and I would like to get to at least Grassy Hollow. Of course this all hinges on me getting up in time.
So there is my dissenting , John.

I am wavering. I don't think I have the mettle for both AC on Sat and Baldy on Sun. :o

Good idea. Charlton down to Redbox to pickup the 8:00 starters.
I like finishing at Charlton instead of Redbox since I'd planned on going to the AWINER
dinner in Calabasas. Is this a go?

Change in plans for me. My hamstring has been bothering me this week & it's not healed enough for me to ride AC yet. So I'll do easier rides this weekend & live to climb another day. Have a great time ... I'll be thinking of you!

I still intend to be at Red Box at 8:00, regardless of how I get there. At Charlton, you won't have that climb at the end.

I'm not going to be out there either, Christy. And it sucks because the following Saturday I'm having my cable/internet service installed during the morning and will, yet again, miss another epic ride. About all the climbing I'll be doing is in Griffith Park, fighting off mountain lions.

We had quite a turnout, at least 20, but Asia and her crew turned back at Dawson Saddle, (well, Travis did end up with a century), and Sarah was feeling sick, so she turned back early and Keith, Manny, and Vance went with her. They started at the bottom of AC anyway. 10 of us went to Grassy Hollow and back to Newcomb Ranch for snacks, where we learned the road was closed due to an accident. We ended up waiting for hours and some of them had beers while we waited.
A lot of them were late for evening activities, including Pete, for his wifes birthday, and Lee for Awiners' dinner. Jason didn't seem to mind, and he rode very well today. I was impressed.

Tragic. I wish the racers would go to the race track.
ANGELES CREST HIGHWAY - A motorcycle crashed into a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department vehicle today, authorities said, leaving the biker dead and the road shut down for hours.
Around 2 p.m., a sheriff's department mountain rescue truck was driving the winding, secluded road near the 45 mile marker, when it encountered a solo motorcyclist.
"They were just driving along, failed to negotiate the turn and crashed head-on into our vehicle," said Sheriff's Lt. Chris Cahhal.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department sent a crew to administer CPR, but the unidentifed man behind the handlebars died at the scene. The sheriff's deputy was unhurt. The California Highway Patrol shut down the highway, a popular and dangerous destination for bikers, to investigate the crash.

Driving home from Encanto this afternoon we could see a fire burning on the south side of the San Gabriels. It looked to be somewhere around Echo Mt. maybe up from Lake. Oh noooooooo.

I think i've been up before but that must have been at least a year ago.
Vance said he'll attach a rope to his waist!
Thanks John for organizing. I had a blast out there, and I hope it won't be another year before I join your group out there again.
Do I need to prepare for this ride ? Is it easy? I dont know if I can climb for more than a couple of miles

Yeah, I rode from Encanto down the SGRT with a friend and got dumplings after in Arcadia and we saw the smoke on the way back up the SGRT. When I got home the helicoptor flight path (I think after refilling with water) was directly over my house, about 100 feet up. My gardener was there and said she'd seen the flames moving up the ridge (looked like a couple miles up from me) earlier, and that it was a lot smaller by the time I got there.
By the time I left to go in and do some stuff at work there was a lot less helo action, and I couldn't really see the smoke anymore.
The helicopters seem to freak out the ducks.

I know that was tongue-in-cheek, but no, you don't need to prepare. Anyone who can do Latigo, will have no problem with AC. Nothing steep on AC, just a long, steady climb.

I actually think Latigo is pretty steep, I've done it about 2-3 times and it hurts everytime.
Is AC about the same grade as Topanga toward PCH? I'm just curious. How does it compare to Baldy?
AC's climbs aren't crazy steep, but there's several long climbs, and the whole ride is at altitude. Sustained climbing (and descending) at altitude pretty much sums up the ride profile. It's really pretty up there, and the company was wonderful.

Latigo will always hurt if you ride it fast enough.
ACH is a comfortable 39 x 21 climb.
Few parked cars so you probably won't get doored.
Climbing above 5K feet requires proper attire, wear Lederhosen.
