Yes, we are riding AC again this Saturday. I'm starting at Red Box at 8:00 and may go to Wrightwood for a century. Keith and others will start at the bottom for a metric double. You can start at Charlton for 75 miles, or turn back at any point. This was so much fun last time I couldn't wait to do it again.
Valleygirl, vertical Bob, scvroadie, and others have signed up. Hoping to see Whitecarbondude, Brandy, maybe Grumpypig, Akak2000, and others. Maybe even M.E.!!!!

 I forgot that I agreed to ride Baldy this Sunday. And as much as I can use GMR as a recovery ride, I cannot use Baldy and the lifts as one (I'd die and be mummified up on that mountain somewhere....which would make future BF rides to the village interesting as you guys could hang different things off my cold, stiff body as you pass). So, I'm out on this Saturday. :(

Sigh. BUT the following weekend, I have zero plans. So, if you guys even think you're riding up to yonkers and beyond, I could commit to join. :D

Man, you should have posted this earlier. You've made me fall in love with that ride. I've also commited to doing the Sunday Baldy ride and I've invited my club members to join. I can't ride both Sat and Sun, wish I could but the wife would be getting the divorce papers ready;) Maybe next time, I need to redeem myself on that mountain... asthma SUCKS!

Might be a stupid question, but where is Angels Crest, how far is it from Irvine?

You left out a syllable in Angeles Crest; I bet that thwarted your search attempts.

Angeles Crest Highway is State Route 2 North(east) from Interstate 210. The full route is to take it from Interstate 210 to Wrightwood and back. Some people start further up the hill to get the best part of the mountains.

John,

For anyone who wants to start at Charlton, I will start there. I am planning on attending AWINER's getting better soiree at the Sagebrush, and I want to be done a little earlier. Plus just in case it is warm/hot I don't want to deal with the heat & distance all the way to Red Box.

What time do you expect to make it to Charlton?

Sorry, Jon, but we just planned it while at the Cool Breeze. We can do it again soon, it's great in the summer when it's hot everywhere else.
Lee, we will probably take 45 minutes to get to Charlton, but I'm not sure.
UmneyDurak, you are welcome to join us at Red Box road and Angeles Crest at 8:00, or start wherever you like. Angeles Crest is Hwy 2 on the North/East side of the 210.

Gene I have been laughing about that since Saturday. Karen's antics don't shock me but you visiting a nursing home in the middle of a cool breeze century ride is just HILARIOUS. Hands down!

As for Labor Day........come on you can make your way over the mountains, past mammoth, to the 95 to the 15 to Overton. There it's settled.

You will see a pay phone sign 1/4 mile before Red Box road, there is a large red wooden box at the corner and 2 parking lots. Don't forget an adventure pass, $5 for parking. You can get one at the Shell Station at the bottom of the hill, or some Sports Chalet stores. A lot of miles up there with no food or water, so plan ahead. If you're inclined to do 50 miles, you can turn around at Islip Saddle and stop at Newcomb Ranch on the way back. If you want to do 80 miles with 9000 feet, you can get water at Grassy Hollow, but no food. To go to Wrightwood and back from Red Box is close to 100 and 10,000 feet. Of course, there is food and water at Wrightwood.
Scvroadie,(Lee), is starting at Charlton and this is about 75 miles to Wrightwood and back.

Asia,

I'm starting from Charlton Flat, sounds like that is where you are starting. I will see you and anyone else who starts there. John, is right it approxmiately 75 miles, I would recommend going all the way to Wrightwood and refuel in Wrightwood for the trip back.

That ride to the ski lifts is not fun! I can't think of a reason to ever go up there again,(though I probably will). I especially wouldn't do it when it's hot. It's also hairball coming back down, especially for those of us over 200# and high up, (think hot brakes).

So...you're sayin' I should do it...and repeats if possible? :p Lookit, John, I've been trying to do that silly hill for the past year and keep wimping out. I'm starting very early to try and get up there while it is still cool. I want to make it to the top and then have moaning and *****ing rights from here forward on how completely a waste of time and leg energy it is to climb up there! Some of the turns are too steep on the right side, so you go across to the other side. The last ramp is 15% and after that, the road is beat to crap with holes and loose rocks. Above all, be careful coming back down as some of the turns are hairpins. Enjoy!

VB you are talking about starting at 7ish and John I think you said 8. Is there going to be an official start time from Red Box? How long will it take everyone to reach Charlton Flat? Since some of us climb slower that others I'm just trying to get an idea as to what time to be ready to roll from Charlton Flat.

What time did you get back there last time? It was almost 4pm wasn't it? and you skipped Newcombs on the way back. If the group leaves at 8am I think those starting at Charlton are looking at an almost 9am start. Leaving RB at 8 heading to Wrightwood makes for a late day. Maybe only to Big Pines /Grassy Hollow would work. Thats still a 8000 foot day.:)

Lee, we are starting at Red Box at 8:00. If you need to get back early, you could start with us and turn back at any point. This would also save some driving. Or, you could wait at Charlton for whoever you want to wait for. Some are doing only 50 miles and I'm not sure how many are wanting to go to Wrightwood. We'll just play it by ear once we get going.
Obviously, anyone can start or turn back any time they want, but the plan is for the group to start at 8:00. I have no time constraints and don't mind being out there late because riding bikes with friends is what I want to do.

From Red Box we went down to Clearcreek, on Angeles Forest over to Upper Big T back to A.C. then on to Dawson. It was an 80 something ride with 9k. Upper Big T is great. This is some of the route of the A.C. 100 for those training for that.

In the past month or so, I've been riding better than I've ever rode, but that doesn't say too much. That said, I certainly won't be disappointed by "only" 8000 feet of climbing. :roflmao: I still intend to ride Baldy the next day.
