Fifty Plus (50+) - Trek introduces crank forward "adult" tricycle

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Aimed toward the aging baby boomers?

Trek took their Pure crank forward, easy riding bike and added a 2nd rear wheel to turn it into a comfort cruiser tricycle. They are offering it in two configurations.

Note the large, comfy seat!

And it has the old classic Sturmey-Archer 3 speed hub.

I've always told my kids when I get old and wobbly I'm going to buy a trike for riding the local trails.....looks like Trek has something waiting for me:D

I have always preferred a two front / one rear wheel configuration for a trike.

I have a friend who suffered a spinal cord injury from a blood clot a few years back. His right leg has permanent nerve damage that forces him to walk with two canes, which is a huge improvement over the wheelchair that he started in. There is no way he will be able to ride a regular bike again. We were just talking Saturday about whether a trike might be an attractive option for him. I promised that if he ever wanted, I would ride the Katy Trail with him. I just e-mailed him the link. Thanks Tom

There are probably a few million people for whom this, and similar products, would be a great bike.

There are even ways of adding 3rd party electric assist motors to these things.

If I were significantly disabled but still able to get around a bit and enjoyed getting out into nature, I think riding one of these w/electric assist would be a wonderful thing.

Well, actually, a new classic Sturmey-Archer AW-NIG 3 speed hub - updated and improved over the old AW.

Sturmey makes a hub with reverse - an interesting idea with a trike.

It depends on your perspective. I don't think that looks comfy at all. To me, This looks more comfy:

Plus, it's yellow!

It's easier to convince them if you put the headrest on.;)

My tricycle is my freedom machine, riding it I can fly, - but once I get on my feet it's back to needing my walking stick again :(

As nice as a recumbent trike might be it's a lot easier to get on the saddle of a traditional tricycle if you've got any kind of mobility/balance problems.

Something to look forward to when I can no longer balance on two wheels with many choices to consider. Ohhh what a feeling to be young again.
