I would like to build a wheel using the Surly 135mm hub for the Rob Roy group buy. This hub uses a 52mm chainline. However I wanted to use a track crank like the Sugino RD2. Using the RD bottom bracket would yield a 45 mm chainline. The spindle length is 103mm. So if I want to get a 52mm chain line should I use a 117 mm spindle? (ie 52 - 45 = 7mm and 7 x 2 + 103 = 117)

My fantasy build would include a Phil Wood bottom bracket so wouldn't want to screw up and have to replace a spindle at that cost. Thanks for the help.

The math works (but shouldn't the track value suppose to be 42?). You could get caught unaware by the fact that some bottom brackets are not symmetrical. The Shimano 118 for instance.

You could contact Phil and ask them directly, they given me input on the correct bb for certain setups.

Thanks, dobber. I'll keep that in mind. I like that the Phil bottom bracket has 2 mm of adjustment to each side. Better start saving my pennies....

That's why I went with a Phil on my Cross Check / Sugino 75 build.

The RD2's are also 45mm chainline now.
