Rumor from a reliable source -
Correction - the special guest is rumored to be Floyd Landis. I got my celebrity e-mails mixed up... there is no talk that I know of saying that Bobke might be there.
Sorry.
Sweet. I've been thinking of doing this ride but the 8/25 BF ride will be my first attempt up (on a bike). I'll see after that if I want to sign-up for this.
Are you coming to the ride this Saturday?

I just want to hear him pronounce "Diablo". That's French, right?

No, it's Spanish. Would be "Diable" in French.
I'm looking at the Devil's Mountain right now, through the Central Valley haze. It taunts me. Stupid flatlander, how dare you?

I think I knew that - my post was just a jab at Bob's exaggerated mis-pronunciations of French place names during the Tour de France.

I don't get the TDF. Dish Network isn't covering it unless I buy the extra package.

I asked Bob if it was true that he climbed Diablo in less than 45 minutes. He started to do his cackle and said "yes, it was true...back in the day.."

I was raised in Washington state but I wanted to be Lynn Swann much more than a Steve Largent.

I don't know why I liked that movie is was totally stupid, but hey, we all have crashed with and without helmets, maybe this was the damage they were talking about

DiabloScott,
When is the registration deadline for the event?

DiabloScott,
When is the registration deadline for the event?
The Challenge is a benefit for Save Mount Diablo and the registration page is HERE (http://www.savemountdiablo.org/Mount_Diablo_Challenge.htm#Mount%20Diablo%20Challenge).
There is also an on-line forum for asking questions and sharing information HERE (http://diablochallenge.proboards101.com/index.cgi).
No deadline that I'm aware of, they may have day-of registration, the event is Oct 7.

I believe that this event sold out last year and there was no day of registration.

I registered last night and the first wave is already full. If you think you can do it in less than an hour, then you better sign up soon or face a lot of traffic on the climb.
I just printed out my registration form. I'll send it in today. The thing is that I think I may be able to do it in an hour. That's the goal at least.
Is it better to put down under an hour or 60-70?

Last year I registered quite late and was in the last wave. What I learned was that no matter what wave you're in, it's a zoo at the start. In other words, from Athenian School to the acutal "gate" on South Gate, there are a gazillion riders that don't know how to handle that wickedly poor excuse of a road.
Once you get pass the gate, then the zoo settles down and it begins to thin out. As an added bonus, it felt good to pass people wearing the different colors of each wave, so that kind of motivated me.

Ahh, don't worry about it - he doesn't know who you are, either, so you're even. :p
I'm in. I just sent in my registration this morning.

Riders can compete on any type of non-motorized bicycle, including tandems, uni-cycles and hand powered vehicles.
uni-cycles?!
haha, I'd like to see that!

Whoa... apparently 5 people did it last year. Top time was 1:22, and looks like 3rd place was taken by the former MVP of the NBA ;)

They have pretty low gearing (LOL 1:1), and a small wheel. so turning the pedals shouldn't be too hard... The balance and keeping a high cadence would be the hardest parts.
They should try descending Diablo on their uni-cycles to really prove something ;)
Okay, I'm signed up on this one. I put myself in the 80min. group. I have never even sniffed Mt. Diablo so I have no idea where I'll end up. I'd like to think I can press and make it in just over an hour, but who knows, maybe I'll just have a funky day and not get going. Hopefully I'll get a chance to get on it once or twice before the actual event.
Maybe if I'm lucky I'll have my flashy nor cal jersey to sport :)
The only thing I want to do is NOT get passed by a uni-cycle.

Small wheel? LoL,
I don't think so and actualy they do descend. It's quite something to see.
