hey people
what is your speed record on a flat road? mine is 51kph without clipless shoes.

41.1 mile/hour (mph) = 66.1440384 kilometer/hour
All out sprint, my usual sprint is 36 - 38mph. Not sure if i had a 2mph tail wind when i hit 41.1, as i have not been able to top 40mph at all this year. :(

32 mph on my singlespeed, gearing is 42x17.
40 mph on my road bike, 53x12.

The land speed record out there in the desert is something like 180mph. Ofcourse the chainring on that bike was about the size of a car tire.

I too would like to know pro spinters speed. I feel i am rather fast at ~38mph, but have nobody to compare it to. I cant race due to medical problems (or fear of crashing...).
Best guess? 43 - 45mph.

Mario has been clocked at over 80 km/h.
I will occasionally (on a really really good day) just top 40MPH on the flat in a sprint but of course I can't sustain it for very long and I'm usually wiped afterwards. If I'm extremely lucky and can get a long lead out from another rider to build up to at least the mid to upper 30s before launching, I can just stab 45MPH but then I drop off immediately.

Thanks for the numbers khuon. I need to try to sprint with a lead out. I usually spin upto ~30 mph then get out of the saddle for the final sprint. Like you, i am usually whipped after the sprint, it takes a good 5 minutes or so to recover.

Wow! These are some pretty high numbers. I could usually reach about 38 as my top speed about 10 years ago. And I thought I was pretty fast then. I usually won most sprints with other riders in Cat 4 races. I just started riding again last week after almost 8 years off the bike. I have added an extra 45 lbs since then and will have to see how fast I can go now. I will be lucky to hit 28. I'll check on my ride tonight.

a sprint to 30 is acheiveable for me, i did it the second day i had my bike. But i think i can do mid 30's for a few seconds, then yup, I'm drained.
27mph, no hills. I know it's lower than everyone elses but BY GOD, IT'S ALL I HAVE!!!
So just lay off, allright???

Well, I did better than I thought. I managed to get my 39 yr. old 231 lbs. all the way to 29.5 mph. As I was getting ready to head out I realized that my computer did not have a top speed function so it took some good timing to be able to see my top speed under the street lights.

I think the TdF sprinters do their thing in the 60 - 70 km/h area most of the time. That's 35 to 42 mph in imperial speak. From previous posts it looks like their are some robbies and badens amongst us!!
I don't consider myself a very good sprinter at all (usually because I'm being passed at a great rate of knots when sprinting) but have managed around 60 km/h.
Watching the last few stages of the tdf, the peloton was cruising at ~65km/h so I'd think the sprint speeds would be alot higher. Baden said in one interview that he put on 'the big gear' for the sprint (53x12 or 53x11? ) and they seem to crank them over pretty quick.

Well after reading through the postings I must say that I'm impressed! Both with the speed that some of you are putting out, and the honesty of spexy!

I would imagine a big gear for him would be 53x11 or maybe even a larger front ring (55?) .. I know Cippo used a 55x11 a few times.
Also, Mario's hit 80kph+ before in field sprints, which is over 51mph ... I'd assume most of the elite sprinters are in the 47-50mph range in that final 200m.
I can't speak for anyone else but before any of you think I'd be a contendor for a position as a sprinter in the pro-peloton, let me just say that those guys can maintain a good 35MPH pace for a long time before quickly ramping up to around 50MPH and holding it for a couple of minutes. I on the other hand can only hit my numbers if I'm fresh and can just barely make a stab for anything over 40MPH... I have no energy to hold it. The power output of those people in the final few hundred meters of a race sprint-finish is amazing... especially after they've already covered a hundred miles.
