route 1 into baltimore is a relatively high traffic road that i know i would not be comfortable riding on. drivers do not give enough space considering the speeds many of them are travelling. i wouldn't recommend it.

160 miles in a day is definatley a long way to ride in one day. you may want to consider stopping for the night. send me a message if you need a place to crash in baltimore.

Anyone have any recommended alternates to Rt. 1 Philadelphia to Baltimore ?

I don't have a whole lot of experience touring. Just did 100 miles Sunday and it was great. No problem. Next up I want to ride Philadelphia to DC, but I'd rather not have to get a hotel room or have to find a safe place to camp out. I've read Rt. 1 Philly to Baltimore is good, then a DC "cue sheet" from http://bikewashington.org/routes/dc2balt/balt2dc.htm the rest of the way.
Looks like about 160 miles

1. Any suggestions of a different route?
2. Do you think I can make it in one day?

I'm doing the same ride in Sept.
I haven't set on rt 1 or 40/13. I google maped it at 130 miles, but I was on those main routes nearly the whole way.

160 in day seems like it might be very tough.
