Mountain Biking - Rate YOUR rear shock

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

On a scale 1 to 10, rate the performance of your rear shock. How does it perform in terms of overall use, pedal bob, big hits, etc.?

I give mine an 8.

Mine is an 8. If it gave out happy endings, I'd probably give it a 9. Maybe.
i think you guys should say what kind of shock you have, and the OP should state whether 1 is good, or 10 is good

That info was not asked for. I gave mine an 8 rated on a voztec curve scale.

What meaningful information are you going to get from the answers?
My shock is a 1.
Probably not very much.
I ALSO asked "How does it perform in terms of overall use, pedal bob, big hits, etc.?", but what I'll end up with just a bunch of random numbers from 1 to 10, a few -'s, and some in the 100's. None of the posts will actually mention the brand name.
The final result will be me ordering the RP23 from Cambria or ebay and thinking about about how I was probably going to get that one from the beginning anyways.
By the way, I rate my rear shock a 5. I haven't used it yet, but it looks OK on my latest built bike.

Mine works fairly good in the pedal bob and big hit areas. It's still an 8.

Did I miss something? What are you building?
Just get the RP23 and be done with it. A Push tune is nice too.

Just built up an '06 Kona Kikapu frame with the parts from my other bike. The OEM rear is a coiled Vanilla with no rebound adjustment. I am going to pull off the Vanilla and sell it. I have the feeling I won't be happy with it if it can't be dialed in.

What is it in your life that makes you so disturbed as to rate your shock with avocado's number? They have medicine for that.

The Santa Cruz website is selling off Swinger 3-Way Air shocks that fit the Kikapu for $99 (you just have to get the proper bushing kit from your LBS ~$20). I have the Swinger on one bike and I prefer it over the RP3 on one of the other bikes.

In chemistry school we always called it Avocado's number. Who the hell knows how to spell Avra...Avgrad...Avragad...Oh, hell...Avocado's number. If you want, I'll tell you about the Clausius-Crapped upon equations;)
I hate guacamole by the way...Eww!

I give my rear shock a 1. 1 being the lowest. It is such because I ride a hardtail. Unless you count my legs. They are a 10 all the way. I may even enter them in a contest. If there is a contest for beautiful legs. Does anyone know of a contest I can enter my legs in?

Are the eyelets between different brand shocks the same? If I get a different shock, can I remove the existing reducers and install them on the new shock?

Not always.
But finding suitable reducers shouldn't be a problem, right? Mostly referring to the Manitou you recommended earlier. I've built up several bikes, but never a FS before.

Remember too that if you find some bushings that are too wide this is not a real problem because they can be cut down; it just has to be done carefully (i.e. - good to have a dial caliper, a razor saw, a good eye, a file and a steady hand).

What about removing a Fox bushing and installing on a Manitou? Any known issues? I can't seem to find any specifics on their websites.
I'm not sure of the eyelet diameters and widths between the two. Hopefully there is someone else here who knows for sure.
The eyelet diameters are different between the Fox and the Manitou. I had to order a bushing kit through my LBS...it took me under a week to get.

I just called SC's sales phone number and they pretty told me the same thing. They did not have the exact specs, but did say the one they were selling did have removable reducers (no weird OEM version) and I could find the right partssomewhere.
Pretty good deal for the shock- Cambria sells it for almost $400. Many thanks to your suggestion earlier.
Now I just need to find someone that wants to buy a Vanilla...

The reducers on the shock from SC won't work with the Kona setup. But if you go to your LBS or call Answer/Manitou directly and tell them which frame and shock you have, they'll be able to get you the right parts.

I'd probably say a 10 in stiffness :p if 10 is the stiffer and 1 the smoother but then I dont really know ... It would probably change if I had a rear suspension
