I was looking at the Specialized FutureShock and the AFR rear shock on their mini flash site showcasing their technology.

The AFR looks pretty normal aside from the self-adjusting dampening (adjusts while you ride). However looking at the FutureShock is confusing. Is it actually two shocks in one? I mean the top portion is shown as a pneumatic (air) shock to absorb small bumps while the bottom is a coil/spring shock to handle big ones? I'm confused... Am I looking at this totally wrong or is that it?

Woah... Awesome R&D... Specialized should be congratulated :)

Well then again Trek came out with the ABP and Full Floater which look pretty intense as well :D

Back in the days of the first futureshock, Shaun Palmer rode DH MTB's. (ya know...he actually became popular a year or two later)
He became pretty competitive in the mid 90's. He rode an Intense M-1 at some point with Specialized painted all over it and tooled around in a custom Troy Lee pimped out bus.

It just takes me back a bit. Palmer actually had his own signature model Manitou FS Ti "Palmer Stroker" fork.

I don't know why the Futurshock makes me think of a Manitou signature rider except for the time line, I guess.

My ride buddy is 190lbs or so and has blown out the rear shock on his Enduro SL three times, soon to be four. Specialized replaced it promptly each time, but declined his request to let him upgrade to a DHX air. He ditched the front triple clamp for a TALAS, so no feedback up front.
