Another hilarious & spot-on post by Bike Snob (http://bikesnobnyc.blogspot.com/2007/08/cycling-in-nyc-know-your-enemy.html). It's sad that this is more truth than satire. :D

Oh, man I love it. Dead on. I'm in the trenches almost daily. Was doored by a taxi for the first time only a couple weeks ago, on an early Saturday morning with very quiet streets. You never know what lurks out there...

I hear ya; in the comments, someone mentioned the "tickety-tick" sound of a receipt being printed from a cab, and knowing what was gonna happen next.

SAME thing happened to me just a few weeks ago. Heard that familiar sound...and just knew the door was going to swing open. Sure enough, cab door to the side of the thigh.

Yep. Dead on.. I've had first had experience with the Access-a-ride busses here. Was almost made into a customer. Nothing like the experience of a big ass bus changing into your lane while you're in it :(.

A favorite incident recently. I rapped on the hood of gypsy cab as it veered in the the bike lane, nearly crushing me. A cab, that was following in the gypsy's draft stopped at the next red light with me. Cab Driver: "THOSE GYPSY CABS ARE CRAZY! NUTS!"
Me: You were doing exactly what he was doing. Using the bike lane to pass.
Cab driver: /feigns ignorance "Me? NO! HE WAS CRAZY! NOT ME!"

I too often see couriers taking pedestrians on cellphones who are j-walking. I saw one woman taken out on 6th ave, her head bounced hard off the street, the courier was preztled in his bicycle. Though he seemed more than helpful to the injured woman. I have however have more than enough close calls with these clueless pedistrans.

Ha. Almost taken out by an Access-a-ride Today.

Ha. Bus made me hop the curb last Week.

What am I laughing at??

And why no mention of PediCabs? Some of these guys are not playing with a full deck.

Access-a-Ride vans are uncanny in their ability to cause danger. They never cease to amaze me in the sheer number of creative ways in which they cause cyclists to nearly die. Horrible, disfiguring deaths too. There should be a reality show or a secret government project on these guys. All you have to do is exactly the opposite of what the access-a-ride people do, and we'd solve world hunger, the middle east, and global warming all in one day.

I'm convinced those Access-A-Ride vans are only out roaming the streets to turn us all into customers.

Yeah Good Idea, Cops are getting really heavy on the cyclists these days. Fines and tickets are to be had everywhere.

A few years ago I was given a ticket for making a right turn on a red light in Forest Hills; Was on 71st. ave/continental and was making the right onto queens blvd. Cop on a bike raced up behind me yelling "...black bike pull over !!" He was on a mission ....
Fine was $100.00
Tried to fight it at the court but the judge didn't want to hear it ....

Absolutely right on the delivery bikes - riding along in an Avenue bike lane, some moron is coming up in the opposite direction - no, asshat, it's you that's going to veer into the 40mph lane two inches to my right, not me!

i've heard their ticketing bike riders in NYC left and right for any old traffic violation. i've also heard that group rides with a large group of people need to get permits now, or something along those lines. i can't attest to either, because i usually ride on LI, but i thought i would mention them to see if anyone else has heard/see similar things...

Porsche Cayenne, aptly named because only having a cayenne stuck up your fourth point of contact would make you drive like that.

Loved it! Best quote ever!
