SEARHC GUY
For a little positive cycling advocacy news, I thought I'd let people know about the Sitka Community Bike Ride taking place on Saturday, Aug. 25, in Sitka, Alaska. This is an attempt to have the largest per-capita bike ride in Southeast Alaska (a region about the size of Florida), in an island town of 8,800 people. We have local folks donating money so we can give away three bikes and a bunch of safety gear, and we have groups dusting off their tandems, unicycles, recumbents, handcycles, bike trailers, in addition to the normal mountain bikes, commuter bikes and road bikes you find in a small rain forest community with only 15 miles of roads (you have to fly in or take the ferry to get to Sitka). This is part of Sitka's bid to become the first community in Alaska to earn a Bicycle Friendly Community designation from the League of American Bicyclists.
