Folding Bikes - yeah bikes by dahon

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

We are thinking of getting a pair yeah bikes by dahon. 6 speed twenty inch tires.
We are retired and travel in a fifth wheel and are fulltime RV'ers with little income.
We have 21 speed bikes we use at our home base campground but are unable the carry them while we travel.
Hope to get some opinion as to this bike that is now on sale as a 2 for $299 special?
Will be used for exercise and get around the campground and towns where we stay.
Thanks

Are you aware that the bikes weigh 37 lbs? Is that something you can lift up and down the RV?
I think you'd be better served by getting a higher quality used folding bike. You can probably stay within your budget and end up with a better bike.

SesameCrunch;
Is that the only reason you would not recomend the Yeah by Dahon.
Our bikes right now weight the same but they don't fold.

I'm very sorry, but I don't have first-hand knowledge of that bike, so I'll defer to someone who has actually owned one.

I have zero experience with Yeah bikes. My comments:
(1) If you just plan on cycling for short 1/2 hour recreational jaunts and you two are mechanically inclined, then my guess is that the bikes will serve that purpose well.
(2) If you plan on longer rides and have any concerns regarding performance, then you should probably save more money and look at other products.
I saw your post regarding weight limits. The general impression is that weight limits are conservative due to litigation. But you ride at your own risk if you are past the weight limit.
Someone else is discussing the Citizen folding bike in another thread. Those appear comparable to the Yeah bikes you described.

yeah bikes are basically re- badged ( or let me say : different badged ) Dahon bikes... The basics are all Dahon but some of the accessories are lower quality .... which does make them a little heavier than regular 20 inch bikes like the boardwalk ... I doubt however that they weight 37 lbs .. that sounds pretty heigh..... If you can get a pair for under 200 it would be a good deal for sure....

I find that surprising as well. Perhaps it is just the shipping weight.

The Schwinn Run-A-Bout I used to have weighs 28lbs on my bathroom scale.
Looking at the Yeah's componentry, I'm betting its around the same weight as the Schwinn.

I got that off the Camping World website. It was listed as weight of the bike, not shipping weight .

I bought a dahon 1 speed. Its pretty heavy and bulky. Im so disappointed. I cant carry that big bike anywhere! its folding convenience is more for storage than portability. The front break also scares me, because the back break is in the pedal. Im afraid I will press the front break without the back break and go flying over the bike. Im used to handle bar breaks and being able to pedal backwards. I think maybe I should sell the bike or send it back. I havent even ridden it yet. Its brand new but its not what I expected. I paid 211 dollars for it. Do you think I can find a better folding bike for 300 or less? even used?

Yes, get a Downtube 2007 model.

+1 shipping weight.
My Raleigh twenty is about 37lb, and is equipped with a SA 8sp hub which is very heavy, plus mudguards, plus rear rack, plus lock and other odss and ends. Plus the frame is a little record breaker for weight - about 5kg, IIRC. So it is extremely unlikely that the Yeah is really 37lb, there isn't anything on the bike that would make it that heavy.

Just sniggles again.
I did a lot of looking and we ended up order a downtube 9FS. It seems the only bike rated at 245# that made my hubby very happy. Now we are waiting for the deliver.
Anyone know how long it will take?
Thanks again guys

Good for you. Yan is usually fairly prompt. But how long it takes depends on your location.
Did you get two of them?

the 9fs thats the 2008 model, mind me asking how much you paid for them and shipping?
why the yeah bike is so heavy is because its got a steel frame instead of aluminum.

As others have said, a steel frame may add a few lbs to an aluminum weight, but it won't add 10.
I'm curious if someone that has one of the Yeah bikes could accurately weigh them.

I just weighed mine on an old heavy medical scale. I got 33lbs. I did have to carefully balance it so it may weigh a bit more.
I don't think it's too heavy for an RV bike, but I would not use it to commute if I had to bring it on and off a bus or train everyday in a carry bag.

Bought two of the 9FS one in white for the big guy & the other is pink for this girlie girl. I bought the bike in pink to match my IPod. just a girlie girl. :)
Although I didn't need the bike for the weight factor! I thought that the downtube 9FS would be great for me as I ride everyday and not all campground have great roads.

My wife loves pink too ... she is pining for a pink Terry saddle; but at the moment she is in the second trimester and riding less. So I convinced her to wait until it goes on sale.
Regardless, I think you made an excellent decision. But do take an opportunity to re-grease and tune up the bike. I recall that Yan's new setup instructions discusses this specifically.

Oh ... if you don't mind losing a week of your life, I suggest you scan through the Downtube thread. There is a lot of useful information there.

That was the first thing I did. And I saved the fine tuning info the other day. Just waiting for them to come.

Ya did good! You'll love the comfy ride on them. Pink and White should look great riding down the street! And the FS will do you well for the campground dirt roads. That's the sturdiest bike DT makes. Good choice overall. Lots better than the Yeah, I think.

33 lbs sounds very reasonable for a steel FULL SUSPENSION folding bike.
Given the high tensile material, I would have thought the 38 lbs earlier reports more credible than the 33 bls. though.
Sounds like the YEAH was a reasonable option, particularly given the price and full suspension, although I might have recommended the Downtube as an affordable performance folder- and they have suspension models available, and it appears the OP went that route.
