Tandem Cycling - Tandem Beat the Clock Time Trial Challenge

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hermes and Velodiva are "throwing down the gauntlet" to all you tandem teams in Northern/Central California out there - you know who you are (DBC Steve and Cornucopia72 and others). Join us on Sept. 1 for the Beat the Clock Canada Road Time Trial (9.7 miles) on the Peninsula. It is a great fundraiser for the Lance Armstrong Foundation to fight cancer and a lot of fun. Details and registration information is available at http://scaledup.com/beattheclock/locationCan.html. So far the Cgallagh and Red Rider team, and the Smoooth/SO team have accepted the challenge. After the time trial, we can have a "tandem peloton" ride out to Peet's in Los Altos Hills and back.

You know who you are? :)

Stoker Terry and I will be preparing for a DBC tour from Davis to Calistoga to Petaluma to Occidental to SF that week, and will miss out on the fun. Wanna race with full rear panniers?

We hope to do a time trial sometime in the next 6 months or so, but up to now we are happy to blast the flats on our own. Have not heard how Cgallagh and Red Rider did at the Wednesday time trial series on Putah Creek Road, but we just walked in the door from a week of road (half bikes) and mountain biking in Santa Barbara and San Diego. No endo's into the cactus, but we came very close....

We did it in 25.08. It was upwind on the first leg. We got there a little late and only had time to practice turning the bike around on that narrow road without falling down, running off the road or falling down. We did not get any warm up and my heart was running pretty fast on the start. I finally got settled down and we boogied. We had no aero bars, aero helmets, skin suits or shoe covers either. I got some aero bars and have been practicing. We are going out again this Wednesday Steve. Why don't you guys come on out and play?

By the way, I would be careful about that Hermes and Velodiva team. They handed us our butts once already and Red Rider raised the bar at Esparto.;) Beat the clock should be a lot of fun and we are looking forward to meeting the Smoooth team and any others that show up.

Sorry you couldn't make it - there is always next year. It was great - there were three mixed tandem teams - all Bike Forum folks - Cgallagh/Red Rider, Smooooth/his superstoker, and Hermes/VeloDiva. The course is 9.7 miles, out and back, downhill on the way out, elevation gain of 400 feet. Just a light breeze and perfect conditions. (The only glitch was that we missed our start time (even though we were at there an hour ahead of time!) Rule No. 1 - synch your watch with the official time - oh well, through my focus off a bit in the beginning, but we soon settled in.)

There were 74 participants in all categories combined.

The results are posted at: http://scaledup.com/beattheclock/results/ResultsSept1byOverallTime.pdf

Sorry, no pictures so far. The Smooooth team smoked with a time of 25:00 (25/74 overall), with Cgallagh/Red Rider close behind at 25:14 (27/74 overall); and Hermes/VeloDiva at 26:23 (37/74 overall). Although last in the tandem category, Hermes and VeloDiva loved the competition and had their best run on this TT course for the season (we did all 4 Beat the Clock TTs this year) by 34 seconds. We had a nice ride out to Los Altos Hills afterwards with Smooooth and his superstoker for coffee at Peet's and checked out the tandems at Bicycle Outfitters. We missed you Red Rider and Cgallagh!

We had the best time on Saturday-Time trial, ride to los altos, great lunch & get together!! Was definitely our best tandem day yet :D Thanks for your wonderful hospitality Hermes and Velodiva. It was great racing with Cgallagh/Red Rider - another very strong tandem team. We missed you guys for the "after time trial" festivities. Look forward to riding with all again soon.

We also had a great time. Man, you guys are tough. We really got a ride in. Sorry we missed the after race ride but other obligations took priority. Hermes and Velodiva are indeed great hosts and ride partners. When you guys get back from Tuscany we will have to get together for another long ride. In the mean time maybe Smooth and Sassy can play.
