I hate bringing my bulky phone along on rides, but would like something to make emergency call on for longer rides. Any recommendations for a prepaid phone: compact, easy to re-charge, with minutes which don't expire? It's not something I want to refill monthly or use regularly.

I use tmobile. Once you've spent $100 total, the minutes last an entire year. You can buy them in blocks of $25. That comes out to just over $2/mo and you'll have more airtime than you know what to do with.

I use opex communications. For just emergencies, they offer $0.10 per min and $9 per month. Free motorola phone. They offer other plans as well, but this seems to me the best for just emergencies only.
