View Full Version : Watts the big deal???

I am getting close to go into production on my e-bike :)

I need to know something but I am not sure how to phrase it so I will ask this question to help.

Suppose I have 2 identical bikes but one has a 350 watt/36 volt system and the other has a 700watt/36 volt system. I am assuming that the 700 watt motor is going to provide more torque than the 350 watt motor and a higher end speed.

Suppose, however, that I am not a speed demon and would travel approximately at the same speeds on both bikes. Will the bike with the bigger motor have a much smaller range - because of requiring more electricity from the battery? Will I need more/bigger batteries for the larger motor?

No. The range will be almost the same if they travel at the same speed, with same acceleration because they will consume almost same energy at these condition.

700 watt motor does not consume 700 W all the time and it depends on the loading.
At such light load, it will consume almost the same power as the 350W motor.
But it could provide a higher power than the 350W motor if it is demanded.

Will I need more/bigger batteries for the larger motor?
Not necessary.
