Introductions - Bike commuter

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

After shedding almost 50 pounds about six years ago, I needed a regular exercise program and chose cycling. My bikes rode piggyback to work and elsewhere so I could log 80-100 miles a week. Two years ago, I started commuting by bike and have logged more than 5,000 miles to and from the job. My weekend fun bike is a Marin Mill Valley (flat bar, relaxed frame road bike) and the commuter is a Marin Bolinas Ridge ATB with a rear rack and lots of lights. When our Scout troop does its single-track weekend outing, I convert the Bolinas Ridge back to its sportier origins. I am 63, married, and grandfather of six. I am a copy editor/writer by trade. My advice to those who want to commute by bike is to be another vehicle on the road, abide by every law, and act like you can’t hear the SOV idiots honking behind you when the two open lanes you left them aren’t enough. I live and work in suburban Dallas, which by policy and practice is a bike-hostile environment.

Scouter, you are not alone there in Dallas! Perhaps one day enough cyclists will band together and overcome the idiot honkers :) .
There's a regional forum just for Texans--stop in and say hi! At least three of our moderators are from around the DFW area, too, so you could possibly meet them one day without even knowing it.
Welcome to BF!
