 No he's not. He's just use to dealing with immaturity appropriately. :D
+1,000 Besides, you have to know when to be mean to get the kids to behave.

Hey there!

Yup - all done - finished up in June. I was just on campus last week picking up my transcript - miss that place already!

You?

A lot of crack dealers make their deliverys on an old bike so their car won't get impounded if they get caught.

Not necessarily true. Some of the areas I have to go through, they are generally riding near new mountain or hybrid bikes...painted total black out with silent hubs and no reflectors or reflective tires. They hide their stash and cash in the seat tube. Seen one or 2 chases and you might be surprised at the speeds they are going at and can jump a car hood to try to get away. Lot of them are mainly lookouts and cell phone or Talkabout equipped.

There's so much money made, housing prices or high rents are no barrier to them and they can move where ever they want to. Then you start to see the neighborhood change and people wanting to move out. If they aren't selling from the house, it's hard for the police to shut them down and even that takes a lot of time.

You know, I live in Sherman Oaks, and there are cars broken into and smashed into all the time. And I am awakened at least once every three months by helicopters flying around the neighborhood with the spotlight on. Point being, this can happen anywhere!

I feel badly for the cyclist and hope he fully recovers. :(

Sherman Oaks is just a stones throw from Van Nuys and thats very HOODIE!!

I taught AP US History and other social sciences, but in reality it was more socialization and disclipline skills then subject content.

It's kind of hard to fire a teacher with tenure:D. I left the profession because it was aging me faster then I wanted to believe. It's a very difficult job, especially when the demographics you find at a place like PHS makes you think you're on a different planet then the one you woke up on.

Yep, many of my students like the AP's office (we don't have "deans") because they have candy jars.

I didn't think that degenerates were able to enter AP US History. In my school, that class was actually difficult. I had a great AP US History teacher, and I got a 5 on the AP test :D

Aren't most teachings jobs going to be stressful at times? Of course the area where you teach matters, but if you don't let it get to you then I think you should be just fine.

It's not hard to get fired if you beat the students ;)

My school has an honors English, and over 75% of the students here are ESL (English is their second language). And yes, teaching is a stressful job. That's why the kids go home at 3 and we get Summers off!!!

I found the summers to be to short since I needed the first two weeks to simply decompress myself from the school year and then the last two weeks were spent prepping for the next school year. So I felt like I mayb got 6 weeks to be normal.

What school you are teaching at?

I teach band, orchestra, and choir at Byrd Middle School in Sun Valley. Many of the students come from broken homes, so they don't know how to behave or respect others yet. As with you, my main goal is to teach them how to be respectful and to strive towards big goals (they're from a mindset that if it isn't easy, it's not worth trying).

I taught Summer school this year for the extra money, but it wasn't very stressful because the class size wasn't as large (teaching music, class sizes of 40-60 are normal) and all of the delinquent students were busy retaking English or math, so I only had students who WANTED to be there :)

Music classes have been fun when I was in school. It was mandatory when I was in grade 7 & 8. Got split into a strings and a ?? (horn?) group managed by two different teachers. Still remembered when we entered into a Kiwanis music competition once. We were the oldest group and we were the worst. Our pickup note sounds like metal fork rubbing on ceramic plate, but smeared all over the place. It wasn't intentional, but my teacher streaked really bad. That was kind of fun. :p

I played the clarinet for 3 years...

brings back good ol memories of band and the instructor throwing the baton(spelling check) whenever we would make blatant errors.

Yeah it was for me too, which is why I decided to teach it. Too bad I have some students who would rather do art on my music stands than play, and those who like playing don't understand the idea of practice. Most of them are well intended, though.

Yeah, I got a fiberglass baton for that exact reason. The students find it entertaining when I pull out the theatrics.

For me when I was in school, it took more dedications than other classes in order to practice. For the other classes, you just have homework that can normally be completely quite quickly per class. For music, I had to sign out the instrument (a violin in my case), carry it home, and spend 1+ hr practicing. It definitely is more work than other classes; plus getting yelled at by family members for torturing them. Don't know about the other instruments, but with strings/violin, it can sound really bad. ;)

Yeah, I actually realized how few of my fellow students practiced in middle school as well. It's normal at their age. Only video games can capture their attention for more than 10 minutes.

Oh, and although every instrument has its annoyance factor, the violin does seem to take the longest to get a decent tone on. At least it's not as loud as the trumpet or trombone, though. Clarinets start squeaking when they learn the higher notes after about 4 months. Let that be a lesson to everyone, tell your child to take flute. The worst sound they get is a soft one.

I enjoyed band first two years...the last year I was burned out. The flute players sat right next to me and they were ultra annoying. Saxaphones right behind me...ugh

Seriously would have been more fun if the conductor wasn't so competitive with all his contests with other schools....

Ah yes. That is still a major music school in the area. We had plenty of discussions about that school in my teacher credential and music pedagogy classes.
