it looks heavy... I'm not sure it belongs on road bikes.

The bearings are 5/32". Most bb bearings are 1/4".

Doen't need to be heavy: large diameter = stiff = thin walls = lightweight, just like tubesets.
This, I think, is a means of getting best advantage out of larger spindles (particularly common on ISIS kit) without reducing bearing diameter.
Will it catch on, though (1 1/4" headsets are a bit slow to get going, after all).

It seems to be a well though out solution to several problems, but it takes more than good engineering to make a marketing success.
If Shimano adopt the same standard it should catch on like wildfire. If Shimano stick to the current std or create their own slightly incompatable one, then there is little chance.

Well, I suppose you are right, doonster...but leave it to shimano to make a 52mm OS bottom Bracket just so it isn't compatible...
