"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - Final (?) Pcad TT Position

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

View Full Version : Final (?) Pcad TT Position

Seat substantially more forward, bars/stem lower, seatpost higher. 1mph+ faster on the same course in this position, I think it is more aero. I am comfortable droping the hamer. When i do, my butt probably slides a bit more forward than in this photo.

I did try to move the aero bars in to be narrower, can't ride them however. This is about my limit. I do have an aero helmet for races by the way. I won't wear that dorky thing in training, I look like George Jetson. This is such a stupid friggin sport. God help me.

Looks good. As far as final, you will know it when you burst into flames.

What's odd about riding a TT bike is that when you first get into the aerobars your initial impression is like 'oh forget this, I can't ride a bike like this'. Then you start to get used to it. Then you find out how FAST it is, particularly on downgrades. Then you start to LIKE it. A lot.

Digging the TT bike thing. That's why I may not totally suck at TT's. I like riding the bike quite a bit. Well, OK, i'll still totally suck at the TT's but I'll ENJOY them and the training : ).

My lord is that funny! I've heard having your elbows in front of your hips is very, very good! Looks like you're right there.

It's official. I need a TT machine now!

In other sports they get to wear cool stuff. In cycling we wear crap that's so unimaginably geeky looking that if you wore it to the next Comic Con or Trekkie Fest you'd be labled a nerd. I'm also tryng to understand how your elbows would be behind your hips on any bicycle besides a WWII Battle of Britain airfield bike, but it's not happening.

I had a Kestrel KM40. Put 20 miles on it and parked it. It felt so odd and unstable I never got on it again and final sold it. How many miles does it take to get "comfortable" on these bikes. I have an old GT edge AERO with dropbars on it begging for aerobars but I can't see investing 300 or so dollars only to put it back in "the barn" after one terrifying ride .

patentcad

I've put 382 mi over 6+ weeks on my Slice, but I'd say that I was comfortable after 60-100 miles. Every time you change the position substantially (an inevitable part of the dialing in process) that re-adaptation process begins anew. However I now find that each new position is only taking 15-20 miles to get comfortable with, not 100. And once I'm dialed in on the new position I can ride my TT bike for 2-3 hours at a stretch. I'm not sure I'd take a TT bike on a 100 mile ride. Which is why Ironman athletes are rather amazing to me. RACE on a TT bike for 112 miles after a swim and before a full marathon?

Not Pcad. Never. Pcad is wussy.

You can't tell if you're ever going to get comfortable on a TT bike in 20 miles. No way. You have at least ride the bike for weeks, be sure you have a good position, etc.

LOL! Yeah, meaning looking at the front view your elbows are not wider than your hips. Keeping your frontal area to a min. That's all.

Do you TT with those Mavics? World most un-aero wheel. If you dont have anything more aero do you have something lighter?

Thanks for clarifying, that makes sense.

The race wheels will be Zipp 404s by the way. Tubulars of course. Those Mavics are very cool for training however. Nice wheels, indestructible. Love 'em.

Looks fast. When you're comfortable in this position (AKA, ride it for a few months, then try this), you may want to see if you can get lower in the front, but the ability to do so is very individual and hit or miss.

If you want the full benefit of the TT helmet, it wouldn't hurt to drop your head more (think looking out the tops of your eyes). Turns your head more into a fairing for your back, and loses some frontal area.

Like I said though, looks good. Stick with it for a while, then start playing again.

Your socks aren't aero.

Oh and to be actually helpful, your bars don't need to be in more. Your elbows should divert the wind outside of your knees which it appears to do.

agreed, at first it's uncomfortable and very hard to look up but then it's second nature.

looking good pcad, I dig the booties too but is it THAT cold in New York yet?:p

I don't have a gut chipcom. That's my sixpack bunching up in a '300'-like mass of rippling Spartan muscle underneath my overly baggy long sleeve turtleneck. And please look at photos of Lance's TT form. He had a hump on his back like a camel. Never slowed him down. Any time you wanna race, I'm there fat boy. Yet another BF Gauntlet has been droped. Pcad is a IV on the road, but a Cat 2 Trash Talker.

As for the booties, it was damp, cool and sort of threatening rain. Pcad's policy: if it's below 60º or there is greater than a 30% chance of rain, the booties come out. Of course by the time I got home it was 78º and sunny, but the odd thing about booties is my feet don't ever seem to overheat in them. Besides, they do confer that Hard Boys of the Spring Classics Look upon Pcad, so I wear them whenever possible.

I agree with UT Dude - I think TT position evolves as you get more adept at riding one of these bikes. I might eventually be able to get that front end lower still... But this is a good starting point. Feels VERY fast, particularly going downhill. It's rather amazing how rapid you can descend when you lower that wind resistance. Scary in fact.

Now I can really die happy if I can only do so before the next post from DocRay or Chipcom.

I would agree that Chipcom is a gut 'expert'. That is not arguable. However his assessment that Pcad actually has one remains...

Incorrect.

In fact I was all psyched up to be an extra in the sequel to '300' ('301'?) until I realized there wouldn't be one. I would encourage CC to keep busting my balls, I would like to get an eating disorder. A few more posts like his and I'll be in the bathroom purging before you know it. That would ROCK.

I've been trying to bust your balls for years...but I've yet to find any to bust! Do I need a mag glass and some tweezers - or are they just covered by all them layers of GUT?

Looks awesome. Kick ass caddie. Try getting into your collarbone now.

Looking from the front, find the base of your neck in relation to your shoulders.
Right now it's above an invisible line drawn from shoulder to shoulder. You're "arced up". Drop that.
Getting even more aerodynamic means your collarbones angle in the other direction. Your head sinks into your body and your shoulders get higher in relation to your spine. Bingo, you're Gamera the flying turtle laying waste to all (http://geek.videosift.com/video/Gamera-the-Brave-Everyones-Favorite-Flying-Turtle).

This is sometimes big as far as refinements go. It can affect your breathing though, so your mileage may vary. Check it.

Riding your TT bike 100 miles can be comfortable when your body adjusts and the bike fits muscles stretch etc. If you have not been doing it, practice riding up hill on the aero bars. It gets comfortable and fast on moderate grades. 2manybikes was comfortable on his TT bike for 100 miles after adapting to it.

Your glasses go over your eyes. :D:D

I'd agree that you can get more comfortable on the aerobars if you stay with it. I'll stay on the aeros but raise off the elbow rests on grades up to about 5% or so, steeper than that (or when my speed drops below 14mph or so) it seems rather pointless - and I also need a more upright position to generate climbing watts.

I will never learn if I could be comfy on a TT bike for 100 miles since my longest training rides with the Slice will be 40-50 miles or so. The longest TT I'll ever do will be 25 miles, and most are 5-15 miles.
