Is anyone doing the critical mass ride tomm in morristown? It leaves Martys Cycle at 630pm and goes around Morristown. Apparantly this is in protest to the Morristown mayors quote that "bikes are not a vital part of the community and there is no place for bikes in that town, therefore nobody should be riding on the streets in Morristown" or something along those lines. There is supposed to be a huge turnout. I think I am going to attend this. Has anyone heard of this or is anyone planning on attending?
I don't believe Mayor Cresitello said anything remotely like that. At least I haven't seen anything like that reported.

Apparently the guy is a) blunt and b) pro-mass transit. And he is right that some of his wealthier constituents, including ones who are happy to get up in spandex and ride their fancy road bikes on the weekends, are not going to bike commute. (Not that this covers everyone who lives in Morristown, of course....) But he ought to moderate his comments a bit, since that general area gets quite a few "weekend warriors."
Still, IMO a Critical Mass during rush hour on a Friday as a political protest / statement is total B.S., counter-productive, not going to change the Mayor's mind, is almost certainly going to alienate a nice big swath of commuters, and so forth.

This was information that was dropped on me regarding the critical mass ride. I wasnt directly quoting Cresitello in my OP just stating what I was told. Sorry if that came off as I was quoting him directly. But I think he will be surprised at the amount of people who do/would commute to work on a bike in the fairer weather. I can see his thoughts and opinons on the people who wear suits and the womens hair blowing in the wind. But attacking the DOT's quote on people commuting on bicycle by saying its ridiculous I feel as if it is the mayor calling anyone who does commute by bicycle or ride a bicycle through the town is just a ridiculous person. I know plenty of people making 6 digit figures a year who commute to work via bike. I also agree that it is ridiculous to hold a critical mass during rush hr traffic on friday, but unfortunatly the critical mass interferes with my daily ride and just happens to be going through my route, so instead of taking a day off from riding due to this, I think I will just join the crowd for the 4 whatever miles, branch off and continue down into Chatham.

I was at the crtical mass ride on Friday night. The Daily Record stated (see link below) that 30 people attended. I estimated it was more like 200-300. I am assuming the 30 is a typo. The ride was large from my perspective I was happy to see such a large turn out. The ride was extremely well behaved, excepts for the helmetless teenages on those little jumping bikes bouncing off all the Jersey barriers in front of the Epstein Dept. Store construction. We rode From Marty's Reliable Cycle around the Green twice and then east on South Street to the Town Hall parking lot. It probably took 5-7 minutes and there were very few drivers inconvenienced for too long. Traffic was light and even with the mass of riders, the drivers' wait was shorter than a typical night in November. The mass broke up from the parking lot without any speaches excepts, "Let's grab a beer at Calalou." Thanks to Marty for coordinated the anrachy. Just like he wanted it.
