I'll spare all the details, but I have a set of Mavic Carbones, clincher, the alum ones with the faux CF fairing, that for weight reasons are not going to be used on road bike anymore.

Anyhow, I am planning on building up a track bike sooner or later, and a team mate mentioned I should atleast hang on to the front wheel for that bike. Thing is I know jack about what would be good for a track bike. So in a nutshell, are the front or set worth hanging onto for track or would it better to sell them off (as planned) and go a different route when this bike comes to fruition? I used my google skills and can't find anybody mentioning these wheels and a velodrome in the same sentence.

Why not just re lace the rims to track hubs? If you can't find decent 24 hole hubs, then use a 32 hole for the rear, with 16 spokes on the drive side,a nd 8 radial spokes on the non-drive side. Wheelsmith makes direct pull spokes that are pretty light.
Is the set 24/20 hole front/rear? If so, use a 40 hole front hub and lace only 20 holes.

A track hub only applies to the rear? I guess my follow-up question is it worth it trying to convert these road wheels, or for the selling price of the carbones & time/effort is it just worth picking up real aero track wheels when the time comes?

I'm not sure what kind of hub the Carbones SL came with, and I'm too lazy to look it up, but if it's a Shimano cassette hub, you should look into this:

hi... mi 1%..i really doubt u can make track wheels from those mavics. Mavic stuff is diff than campy and way diff than shimano unless your mavic rear hub has a thread there is nothing u can do. And i really doubt the rear mavic carbone has threads in the hub. The other details is that u wont be using the corbones in the road because of a wheight issue, right? Well if because of a wiehgt issue u wont be using them in the road in the track the wheels will be even more flimpsy? In track as heavy u are the stronger the wheel u might need... second option? Lace those rims to a nice pair of track hubs, use super strong spokes and maybe u can use them, well that my 1%

thanks
